I don’t think it is—my father certainly wouldn’t fly across the country because he hadn’t heard from me in a while—but clearly, I’m not an expert here.

“If you want my advice,” Evelyn says, “don’t start yelling that he’s doing it all wrong out there.”

General Daniel’s eyebrows lift. “He can recite more about this sport in his sleep than I could awake after studying it for a week. And last I was aware, he didn’t talk in his sleep.”

“Doesn’t mean you wouldn’t yell at him anyway,” Evelyn murmurs.

“Those days are over.”

All of us fall silent and look back at the players on the pitch.

“But I don’t know how to prove it to him,” he says on a sigh.

Yep.

Heart officially hurts. And this one is not my business.

I glance at my watch. “Oh, look at the time. Have to run. Meetings. Enjoy training, ladies. I’ll see if I can find anyone to give you a full stadium tour. General Daniel, lovely to see you again.”

After an awkward dinnerwith my father where he tells me Goldie and her friends are nice, I tell him I have to get to bed early before training tomorrow.

I do head home, but I don’t stay there. Instead, I scoop Sweet Pea up into her puppy sling—getting close to her bedtime, and you donotwant to mess with this dog when she’s tired—and we head out for a little late evening shopping.

The neighborhood stores are more crowded than I’ve seen them before, but I’m not out often at this time of day.

Maybe this is normal.

What’s not normal?

How much I want to go see Goldie.

I shouldn’t.

I should go home again.

I should definitely not go see Goldie.

You don’t show up at a woman’s place the night after you slepttogether unless you want to send a clear message, and the message I’m sending in showing up here isI’m obsessed with you.

I want to screw around with you again.

I want to be your friend.

Friend.

Yeah, that’s a word.
