“No, I mean,I need a cheeseburger. And a milkshake. And truffles.”
Her brows squeeze together. “Okay. There’s a place a couple blocks from here. I can call in an order.”
“And a glorious pile of french fries dripping in cheese and bacon bits too. And—and—andcheesecake. Topped with chocolate chip cookie dough.”
“Oh, sweetie, it’s going to be okay.” She pulls out her phone. “I promise, thiswillbe okay. But cheeseburgers first. I’m on it.”
She has no idea the thoughts swirling in my head. I can’t tell her either. She’d try to talk me out of it.
And she can’t.
Mind made up.
Octavia Lightly, bullied granddaughter, fake social media star, neglected daughter, and lonely little rich girl, is dead.
It’s time for the real Tavi—the good friend, the humanitarian, the chocolate goddess—to rise from her ashes—or go down in flames trying.
“Naomi?”
“Hm?”
“If this doesn’t work, I just want you to know that you are one of the very best things to ever happen to me.”
“If what doesn’t work?”
“Me.”
Chapter 36
Dylan
The last thing I expect to see when I walk out my front door Friday morning is Phoebe Lightly storming up my path. “Are you okay?” she asks.
I lift my brows and pretend I have no idea what she’s talking about.
After getting Not-Tavi, whostillrefused to give us her name through our entire not-poker night, settled at Jane’s house to hide from the Lightly clan, I stepped into Ladyfingers, spotted Carter strumming his guitar, and promptly left there too.
My mom thinks I got dumped.
Maybe that’s what has Phoebe looking like she drank sour milk.
Maybe she thought I was good for Tavi and she’s sad for me too.
Who knows?
She shoves her phone at me. “You haven’t seen this?”
I glance down. “The TikTok app?”
She growls and hits a button, and a video of Tavi springs to life.
I don’t know where she is. Looks tropical. Bright-green trees behind her, and she’s sitting at a table that looks like it’s made of straw.
Her makeup is uneven.
And she’s picking up a massive cheeseburger. “Confession,” she says, “I hate bean sprouts. They taste like mud water.”
I choke on air as Tavi takes a massive bite of the burger.
