She couldn't have.

Could she?

Fuck.

Bending forward, I threw up Mrs. Neal’s blueberry pancakes all over my shoes.

CHARLOTTE

“Holy fuck!”I muttered as I threw myself through Hannah’s office door, slamming it behind me, my chest heaving and my heart pounding.

I thought I’d spied Luke lurking around the admin counter, but that couldn’t be right. Isla wasn’t in today so Luke had no reason to be here. Even if he was working and dropping off a patient, there was no reason for him to wander that far into the hospital.

But one look at that uniform had sent my pulse skyrocketing and me running for cover.

“Uh, hi, Charlotte,” Hannah said, standing up from the chair she was sitting in, chatting with a good-looking guy in a Chicago PD uniform. What was it with guys in uniform at the moment? It was like I was surrounded by a walking, talking sexiest men calendar. “Do you remember my brother, Hayden?”

Oh, yeah. Hayden. Brother. Cop. “Hi, Hayden. Sorry to interrupt,” I mumbled, staring at the door I’d just fallen through wondering if it was safe for me to venture back outside.

“What’s wrong?” Hannah asked, coming toward me looking worried.

“N-nothing,” I lied, not sounding at all convincing.

Hayden stood before kissing Hannah’s cheek. “I’ll ah, leave you to it. But I’m coming over soon. I want to see my niece.”

“Yeah, yeah. Everyone loves Bailey. I get it.”

“She’s kinda cute,” I offered.

“Yeah, she is. She’s like her uncle,” Hayden said with a wink. “I’ll call you.” And he was gone.

“Now. Who are you hiding from?”

“No one.”

“Charlotte?”

“Fine. There’s an EMT …”

“Ah. Luke’s in the building.”

“I don’t know if it’s him.”

“But you don’t know that it’s not either.” Hannah smirked.

“Even if it is, I don’t care.”

“And you’re still a shitty liar.”

“Hannah …”

I didn’t get a chance to say anything more before the door was pushed open and Luke was standing there, Liam trailing behind him.

“Charlotte,” he panted.

“Luke.”
