Hannah:Please tell me you didn’t fuck it up and say something dumb like ‘thank you’
Hayden:I didn’t say anything
Hannah:WHAT! WHY?
Geez! I even got the screamy capitals.
Hayden:She hung up on me
Hannah:Explain
Hayden:I told her I was getting her coffee and her reply was, ‘see this is why I love you’
Hannah:Is that it?
Hayden:What do you mean is that it? What more is there?
Hannah:Calm down. It doesn’t even count as a real I love you
Hayden:It doesn’t?
If Hannah was right, and God I hoped she was, that would make everything easier. Much, much easier.
Hannah:Nope. I’d love you if you bought me coffee
Hannah:Don’t overthink it
Hannah:Buy the coffee. Take it to her and see what she does. Take your cues from her
Hayden:And that’ll work?
Even though I was skeptical, I was willing to give anything a go.
Hannah:Yep
Hannah:But Hayden, what happens if she actually DOES love you? Would that be so bad?
I didn’t know how to answer that one. I mean, it was too soon for us to be getting that serious. We were only working things out, but the thought of losing her, having her take off before I even woke up was enough to have me on edge. I didn’t doubt that I felt something towards her, I just didn’t know what it was. Or maybe I just wasn’t ready to label it.
Hannah:Trust your gut Hayden
Hannah:Skye’s a great girl and it’s good to see you smile again after everything that's happened. If Skye’s the one putting the smile on your face, then there’s something there.
My name was called and I moved forward and collected our order.
Hayden:Yeah. You’re right. Heading upstairs now so wish me luck
Hannah:You don't need it. You’ve got this. And I’m always here if you need me, big brother.
Hayden:Love you
Hannah:See… I bet saying that wasn’t that hard
And just when I thought I liked my sister, she had to go and throw in one final taunt. Hannah was the one person who I knew without a doubt had to have the last word in every single conversation. Even when I won the argument, which was rare with her, she always managed to get the final word in.
Balancing our drinks, I headed back upstairs not sure what to expect but with Hannah’s question clouding my mind. Would it really be that bad?
I reached the door and even before I opened it, I could hear singing. Terrible, off-key, overly loud singing. With a smile straining my face, something I wasn’t expecting today, I slipped in the door quietly and set the coffees down beside the TV before turning my attention to the bathroom. I’m sure wherever Whitney Houston was right now, she was rolling her eyes as Skye murdered “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.”
