“How?” We hadn't even figured out what we were yet, but the bubbly blonde with a blue name tag was labelling us.
“If we were brother and sister, we wouldn’t be able to do this,” he chuckled before tipping me backwards and kissing me in one of those old-school style Hollywood kisses. A kiss that made me blush from my head to my toes.
When he set me back on my feet, he turned back to the pile of sheets in front of us and pulled a dark gray set from the pile.
“I think I like these ones,” Hayden decided like he hadn’t just stolen my breath.
“You said you have a couple of days off coming up, yeah?”
“Yeah. I’ve got three night shifts in a row, then I’ve got four days off. Why’s that?”
“I want to go to Texas and see Marianne.”
“Okay.”
“And I want you to come with me,” I started, holding my breath. I Didn't have a clue how Hayden was going to react to that one. I hadn’t planned on asking him to come with me. Hell, up until five minutes ago, I hadn’t actually even planned on going myself, but now it was out there, I knew it was the right thing to do. Not only did I want to make sure Kellie and Cassie were all settled and things were going well, but I needed to talk to Marianne and make sure she was okay with everything. And it wasn’t a conversation I could have over the phone.
“Okay,” Hayden replied without flinching.
“Okay? You’ll come?”
“Yeah. I’ll come. I haven’t seen her since… and given all this shit going on with the will, I want to make sure she’s okay.”
I knew Hayden was a good guy, but he just kept proving it.
“Right, let’s go pay for these, and then I want to take you for lunch before we go home so I can have a nap. Someone—” He looked pointedly at me. “—kept me awake all night with their shenanigans.”
“Shenanigans, hey? I thought you liked my shenanigans,” I flirted, as I adjusted my purse on my shoulder.
“Oh, sweetheart, I love your shenanigans. In fact, I’m thinking a shenanigan-filled afternoon is exactly what the doctor ordered.”
“Oh you do, do you? And what happened to your nap?”
“I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” Hayden winked, leading me towards the cashier.
While Hayden slept, after two orgasms for me and one for him, I sat at the kitchen counter on my laptop. After booking us flights to Texas, I’d called Marianne and let her know I was headed her way. Even though she offered to put us up, I politely declined and booked a nearby hotel. She might love me now, but once we got there, things could change and I didn’t want to put anyone in that situation.
Once everything was sorted, I started stuffing around looking for a job. I had no idea what I wanted to do or what was out there, but I needed something. Sitting still wasn’t something I was good at and I was starting to go stir-crazy. Retail wasn’t for me and I wasn’t a fan of customer service.
“What are you looking at?” Hayden asked from over my shoulder, scaring the crap out of me and causing me to jump half off the chair.
“Jesus! You’re supposed to be asleep, not sneaking up on me!” I scolded, spinning around and looking at him.
Damn he was gorgeous. Wearing only a pair of boxers, his hair was mussed, he had creases from his pillow across his face and his eyes were still only half open. With his whole chest on display, I couldn’t stop myself from reaching out and trailing my fingers through the soft hair scattered there.
“It’s not my fault you were concentrating so hard and didn’t hear me.”
“It’s so your fault,” I confirmed, looking up and into his eyes for barely a breath before he cupped my cheeks and placed a soft kiss on my lips.
“Okay, fine. I’ll take the blame.”
“Good.”
“So.” He began shifting behind me and draping his arms over my shoulders, the warmth of him seeping through my shirt. “What’s all this?”
“Just something I was mucking around with,” I said, trying to close my laptop only for him to stop me and hold it open.
“You’re on job sites,” he stated, pointing out the obvious.
