Reaching for her hand, I watched as she tentatively set her palm in mine, barely a breath passed before I yanked her towards me until she was practically falling on top of me. Tucking her under my arm, I reached over and flicked off the lamp, plunging the room into darkness.

“I guess you’re not sleeping on the couch tonight?” Skye sassed and even in the darkness I knew she was smiling.

“I’ve had my tongue, fingers, and cock inside you. I’m not sleeping on the couch,” I declared.

“Fair enough.”

“But when I wake up, you will still be in my arms and won’t have run out the door again. Will you, Skye?” I asked, trying to keep the anxiety out of my voice.

“Hayden…”

Sitting up abruptly, Skye toppled off me. “No, Skye. I’m not fucking around here. I’m not doing this again. We’re not just fucking. You and me, shit…” I ran my hands through my hair, every muscle in my body tight with frustration. “I’m just not doing it. Promise me I’m not going to wake up and you’re going to be gone.”

“I’ll be here,” Skye promised softly and I sighed heavily, feeling the tension seep from my body.

Flopping back on the bed, I rolled onto my side and pulled her into my arms, spooning her. With my hands slipping under her shirt, I settled them on her stomach and closed my eyes. When Skye stopped squirming and got settled, I placed a soft kiss behind her ear barely catching what she said next.

“I hope we figure out what we are,” she whispered into the darkness.

I hoped we did too. I hadn't’ been sure we could be anything more than a few hot nights but after laughing and talking to her, everything I thought I knew had all been upended, and now I wanted... well I wasn’t sure what I wanted, but I had a nagging suspicion, Skye could be it.

I didn’t thinkHayden was serious when he said he expected me to be in his arms when he woke up, but when the need to pee woke me in the early hours, he was pressed against me, his arm a steel band around my waist pinning me against him.

Wriggling out of his arms, I managed to make it halfway across the room before I stubbed my toe. “Fuck it!” I swore, bending down to rub it.

“Where are you going?” Hayden mumbled sleepily.

“Go back to sleep,” I told him as I limped across the room.

“You’re not running away are you?”

His voice was thick with sleep and I was forced to blink away my own sleepy haze and turn to face him. The truth was, the idea had crossed my mind once or twice while I’d been lying there in his arms, feeling the warmth of his breath on my neck.

“I’m just going to the bathroom. Go back to sleep,” I tried to reason, ducking into the bathroom.

Once the door was closed, I flicked on the light and looked down at my poor toe. It was angry and red and the nail was hanging half off. Lifting my foot up, I rested it on the basin before reaching down and ripping it off, biting my lip so I didn’t cry out. After cleaning it up with a tissue, I did what I needed to do and washed my hands before creeping back out and sliding under the covers.

Lying on my side of the bed, I made sure to keep some distance between us, trying not to disturb him. But he wasn’t asleep.

“You thought about running, didn’t you?”

I had two choices. I could tell Hayden what he wanted to hear, or I could be honest. And after everything else that was going on around us, we had enough battles to fight without adding lies.

“Yeah,” I admitted.

“But you didn’t?”

“No, I didn’t,” I confirmed, staring at the ceiling.

“I’m glad.”

“Me too,” I admitted, feeling more than a little overwhelmed.

I didn't know what Hayden and I meant to each other. I didn’t know what the future had in store. But for some reason, I liked him. He was a good guy. He was kind and generous and protective and sexy as hell. And he hadn’t once judged me for anything—not for what I liked and not for what I wanted.
