I held in my eye roll as I nodded once.

“Twice a week, I have a cook that comes in to make my meals. I’ll talk with her when she comes intomorrow and see if she will teach you to cook. It’d make things easier.”

I gave another single nod, my mind trying to wrap around the idea of me cooking.

“If you try to poison me or kill me with a knife or anything else you could possibly get your hands on,” he paused, lowering his voice in warning, “I’ll lock you up in a cage.”

A horrible shiver wracked my body. “I won’t, Sir. Promise. I’ll be good.” The words were rushed as I wrapped my arms around my body. The food I had just consumed threatened to make a reappearance.

I’d do anything to keep the little bit of freedom to roam this house.

“I believe you,” Sir said, softening his voice again. “The things on the list don’t have to be done every day. If you have questions, ask.”

“Yes, Sir.” I swallowed, my mind still stuck on the cage threat.

“One last thing.” Sir paused, laying something on the counter. “Hand?” confused, I put my arm on the counter, letting him take hold of my right wrist. “This is to track you.” He slipped a thin but strongpiece of metal thing around my wrist, securing it with some sort of tool. “It has a GPS tracker in it. If you go out the front door, I’ll get an alert on my phone. If you try to run, I will find you.”

Didn’t he know I wouldn’t run? So far, here, I have had food, clothes, and a place to sleep. I could deal with whatever else he wanted as long as I got to keep those three things.

“I understand, Sir.”

“It’s not that I don’t trust you to follow my rules,” he said, almost sadly. “Well, I don’t, actually. But if you felt the need to run, I must have a way to track you. If the men I got you from got ahold of you again, I have no clue what kind of state I’d find you in. They won’t stop at anything, even if it means you die.”

I shrugged. I didn’t care if I died. It was all just a means to an end.

“I’ll repeat it. I like to take care of what belongs to me. That means everything inside and out of you.”

I still had no idea what that meant.

“Do you have any questions?” I felt his gaze on me as he asked.

I had so many, yet none of them were things I was willing to ask. It was bad enough they were swirling around my mind. In time, I’d get my answers.

I shook my head, sucking in both of my lips over my teeth.

“I’m an easy going guy, Dakota. You can ask me whatever you have on your mind.”

I highly doubted that.

“Alright. I have some work to do in the office. You can work on the chores.”

Another nod from me.

I waited until Sir was in his office before I put the dish from my snack in the dishwasher. Then, I turned to the list, skimming through the items.

Everything was so normal. Clean bathrooms, dusting, laundry, cleaning up after meals. And each thing was pretty detailed, too. There were notes on where to find something like soap and other cleaners.

There certainly wasn’t any need for questions on what Sir expected from me. And everything I was sure I could handle.

So, since it didn’t seem like the house required a lot of cleaning just yet, I set out to track down all thedirty laundry. I moved nearly silently through the house, not daring to make more of a sound than needed.

Chapter 12

Dakota

I couldn’t stop yawning. I kneeled on the floor beside Sir’s leg as he watched the news. It was boring, which wasn’t helping me fight off the tiredness that had crashed over my head.

For so long, I was used to sleeping at odd hours. It wasn’t exactly any different now, being tired, but after an afternoon of walking around the house and trying to find little things to dust, I was a different kind of tired. The muscles in my legs weren’t used to such movements.
