“What’s wrong?”
“What?” I turned, hoping whatever he saw was no longer there.
“Nothing.” He turned back to the tablet, a look of worry on his face.
Guess I wasn’t the only one unsure as to where we stood now.
Letting out a breath, I shook the feelings away. Having two people in the house who could read every reaction from me wouldn’t end well for any of us.
Without talking, I pulled my computer out of its hiding place and set it on the table.
I was out of my element here. It didn’t help that I was starting to question everything I was doing. With Emery, it had been easy. We had fallen into a pattern, even when he was just next door.
I grunted, pounding at keys on my computer to bring up my social media accounts. I couldn’t help but lift my eyes, finding Emery peeking over the back of the couch. His chin rested on the cushion, a look I couldn’t name covering his face. Something I hadn’t felt for a long time fluttered in my stomach.
“Need help?”
I took a deep breath, hopefully getting my emotions under control. “No.”
I grumbled some more as the first post that popped up on the account was from my ex.
I had forgotten I was still friends with him. The way he had left me high and dry should have been a good enough excuse to never have any sort of contact again.
The post was of a picture of him and some other man I didn’t know. It wasn’t even the same man he had cheated on me with. Go figure.
Once a cheater, always a cheater.
I glared at the screen, scrolling away from his smug smile. One of these days I’d actually unfriend him.
Max. I had once loved him with everything in me. He was just a year older and seemed to be cool at the time. I’d thought, at one point, that we’d maybe spend the rest of our lives together. We had something I thought was unbreakable.
But, in the end, I wasn’t enough. He was one cheating bastard. Max broke my heart when I had come home early one day and found him in our bed, fucking another man.
I had walked out, not looking back. He’d tried to reach out to me a few times over the past five years, but I always ignored him.
After a while, and more mindless scrolling, I sighed.
Deciding on an early night, I shut everything down and put the computer away.
Emery
My feet took me right up to Ryker. I breathed in deeply, trying to keep the nerves at bay.
I had spent most of the afternoon with Enzo, cuddling on the couch and talking. It was much needed. In some ways, it was almost like we’d never been apart.
I didn’t know what would happen from here. I didn’t want to think about the future. It was easier to just live in the moment.
After watching Ryker grumble and huff at his computer screen, a small smile lifted the corner of my lips. Seeing him grumpy was entertaining. Something in me wanted to know what was going through his mind.
By the time he closed his computer, I was right next to him. He jerked but then let out a breath.
“Everything okay?”
Despite the mixed emotions that swam in his eyes, he forced himself to relax.
I wasn’t the only one that felt out of sorts, apparently.
“Watch a movie with us?” Having slept so much today, I wasn’t near ready to lie in bed, tossing and turning.
