I simply breathed, letting my thoughts stay right where it was. I was perfectly comfortable, laying spread out on my stomach. The growing hunger was easily ignored. For now.
“Time to wake up, Em.”
It took me an extra moment to realize that the voice was not Ryker’s.
My eyes flashed open, my heart beating rapidly in my chest.
Was I still dreaming? Or was I hallucinating?
“You aren’t,” Enzo whispered. He had yet to remove his hand from my face, and my eyes closed again as he swiped a finger over my brow. “I’m very real.”
“Enzo?” It took way too much work to open my eyes, but I did.
He was still there, hazel eyes watching my every reaction. He looked so much older than I remembered, which was crazy.
“Hi.” Great…I was the dumbest person ever.
“Hi, baby.” Enzo was barely able to contain his amusement. His eyes glistened with humor.
Within a heartbeat, I moved and pressed myself as tightly against him as I possibly could. A squeak escaped him at the surprise movement.
He was really here. My Enzo.
His lips pressed against my head as he let me wrap my entire body around him as much as I possibly could. I breathed him in, my nose pressed against his throat.
There had been so many times when we’d fall asleep just like this, us clinging to one another as if we were each other’s lifelines.
“God. I missed you, Em.”
I wasn’t sure I could talk. There was no need, though. Enzo understood as I pushed myself even closer to him.
There wasn’t any space for air between us.
Finally, after who knew how long, smells from the kitchen reached us, causing Enzo’s stomach to growl. At the noise, he slowly pulled away, and it took everything in me to not cry out.
“I haven’t eaten today, and whatever he’s making smells too good to pass up.” His voice was still soothing, keeping me calm like always.
Instead of moving or speaking, I gave him a pleading look.
“Fine.” He pulled me back against him. An audible sigh released from me.
“Don’t leave me.”
“Never again,” he promised me, flexing his arms around me.
It didn’t last long before his stomach made another noise, and I knew I couldn’t put his needs off. He wouldn’t for me.
“Food?” I lifted my head, my eyes pinning to his lips. It was so tempting to reach up those few centimeters and press my mouth to his. It had been ages since I’d felt him like that.
“Yeah.” Enzo’s breath washed over me before he gently pressed his lips to mine. It was sweet, short and toe-curling. I melted into him, wanting more. Always more.
The kiss was cut off as a knock on the door sounded. We both jerked before I looked over Enzo’s shoulder, finding Ryker. He stood, hands crossed over his chest. He didn’t step into the room, staying right there on the threshold.
“Dinner’s ready.” His eyes were red, and he looked tired.
Was he upset? Was he going to use us against one another like Steven?
“Come on. Food’s gonna get cold.” With that, he disappeared.
