He was alive? How? Why?

“I’m here, Emery. I’m here.” Enzo rocked us back and forth. He repeated it over and over, never once letting his hold on me loosen.

Finally, my sobs slowed. My breath leveled out slowly. But I didn’t move. I was scared. If I opened my eyes, would he disappear? Would I wake up from this dream to find it all stuck in my head?

“It’s not a dream.” The words finished with a kiss to the other side of my neck. “I’m real.”

Ryker

My heart broke seeing them together, wrapped around one another like they were each other’s life line. Actually, that was exactly what they were. They needed each other. My soul hurt, knowing I was already losing something I didn’t have.

“Why didn’t they get put together to begin with?” I huffed, stepping back to let them have space.

“That was Enzo’s idea. I would have instantly placed them together once the dots had been connected.”

She gave me a look, letting me know it wasn’t her story to tell.

“He’s okay to stay here for the night, right?”

“However long is needed.” As long as the man felt comfortable, of course.

“I can move them both back to the safe house?”

“They’re welcome to stay, but it’s up to them.”

I was possibly being selfish. I wanted to keep Emery close. But I knew I had to let him go, if that was what he wanted.

“We’ll let them decide.” Scarlett took control, knowing I was out of my element. “Are you doing okay?”

Not really. I nodded my head, though, before turning my back on them all to get a drink of water.

Seeing Emery break down like that was never easy.

My arms felt empty, cold, now that he was in another man’s arms. An ugly feeling took hold, and I gnashed my teeth together.

I didn’t have the right to feel anything towards Emery. It wasn’t my place. Yet, my heart didn’t listen.

“You’re a good friend, Ryker,” Scarlett said softly. “They both need that.”

“Sure.” It would be better for them to keep their distance from me. Better for me.

“Enzo will warm up to you,” she went on, not knowing my swirling thoughts.

I glanced over at them, seeing them still in the same place. I couldn’t hear or see their faces with how they were wrapped around each other.

“It’s okay.” I shrugged. I didn’t expect him to.

“He knows if you want to be there for Emery, he’s gonna have to work with you. He hates men, but he’s willing to work for the one he loves.”

I only hummed.

“But so will you.”

That got my attention. I turned to her, trying to figure out where the hell she was getting these crazy ideas from.

She opened her mouth, but it wasn’t her voice that reached me.

“Uh…a little help?”
