“No. Yes. Shit, I don’t know,” he said, rubbing both hands down his face. “I am so far out of my comfort zone with this.”
“With what?”
“It’s easier to show you,” he said. “It’s what I won. I didn’t know it was going to be this. I should have, I guess, but it never crossed my mind.”
“Okay,” I said slowly. My heart fell to my feet again. “Let me give this to Dominic first.”
“He’s not in his room.”
“I know,” I said. “He’s in mine.” A blush covered my cheeks at that. “it’s not what you think.”
“How do you know what I’m thinking?”
“I…I don’t, but it—“
“It’s fine, pretty girl,” Zevon said, a small smile on his face. “Go give that to him, and then come to my room?”
“Okay,” I said, blowing out a breath.
“I can give it to him,” Collin said. “I need to check on him, anyhow. It’s been a little bit.”
“It was like twenty minutes ago,” Zevon said.
“And if he’s still dizzy from walking across the hallway, he needs it.”
“Fine,” Zevon huffed.
“He didn’t have a fever, but he was sweaty and out of breath,” I said, handing over the glass and medicine to Collin.
“Normal, but I’ll keep a close eye on him. This isn’t the first time.” Collin’s words didn’t ease my worry.
“That’s what he said.” It felt like my throat was closing up with tears.
“He’ll be fine. Sleep will help. I’ll track you down in a bit to remove the other stitches,” he said. A moment later, he was gone.
“Just, please don’t freak out on me,” Zevon said, lifting his eyes slowly to mine. “I’m already freaking out enough.”
“No promises,” I said. What could he possibly have won that would make me freak out? I panicked easily, but him…he was never so out of sorts.
“I guess that’s the best I can ask for,” he sighed. Then, he took my hand, wrapping them together before leading me to his room. His nervousness rolled off him in waves. It caused my chest to tighten with each step closer to his room.
Did I want to know what had him so upset?
Before I could debate with myself, Zevon pulled me into his room. He had made sure his steps were heard as he pulled me around the side of the bed.
I wasn’t sure what I was seeing, nor what to do. What the hell had he gotten himself into now?
“I swear, I didn’t know,” he said, letting go of my hand and taking a hard seat on the end of the bed. His eyes lifted to mine. They were filled with pain and uncertainty. The same look he had looked at me with a number of times. “If I had…I wouldn’t have bid on it.”
“It’s not anit!” I hissed. “It’s a human being, Zevon.”
“I know!” he shouted before grimacing.
Looking at the mountain of skin and long hair, it was hard to tell exactly who it was. The person was pushed as far into the corner between the nightstand and wall it could get into. Trembles shook its form.
I closed my eyes and took as deep a breath as I possibly could. Memories of not that long ago jumped to the surface. I had been that scared of people, of these people that were in the house right now. I wanted nothing to do with them. Now look at me…I was going to offer something I should never even consider doing. I wasn’t in my right mind.
“Name?”
