I looked at the card lying on top of a folded piece of paper, but I didn’t touch it. Did I want to know how much money I had to my name? I wasn’t sure.

“Here is the letter from Lisa Banks,” he went on. “And also the life insurance policy, since Mr. Vicci said you needed a copy.”

“Why did you want to see me face to face for these?” I asked, looking up at him.

“To make sure you were alive, per Lisa’s requests.”

“She is very much alive,” Dominic said, his voice low.

“And for my own personal reasons. I was worried, Scarlett. I…I should have contacted Mr. Voss at least, after I knew the shape you were in when I saw you.”

“Yes, that would have been helpful,” Zevon huffed.

“Drop it.” I turned my eyes to him.

“I didn’t do anything.”

“Thank you, Harvey. Was this all?”

“Yes. Unless you need to get anything in order in case something were to happen to you…” he trailed off.

“I’m sure that, between Caesar and Ace, things are already in place,” Zevon said.

“Most likely,” Harvey agreed. “Then, I’ll leave you be. Don’t be afraid to call me any time.”

“Sure,” I said, knowing I wouldn’t.

“Oh, before I go,” Harvey said, lowering his voice and turning to face me. “Alan is looking for you. He has a few men around. Being in here… don’t count on it being this safe next time. He wants you. Alive. I have no clue what he’s thinking he will accomplish by going up against the Vicci/Voss family, but he wants you back.”

“She’s safe with us,” Dominic said. “We’re only passing through to meet you before leaving the country.”

“Good,” Harvey said with a nod. “Then I hope to never have to see any of you again. Do what your heart desires, Scarlett. That’s all that Lisa ever wanted for you.”

With that, Harvey picked up his suitcase and left the café. We waited five minutes before we followed.

Irode back home with Zevon, fearing that Dominic would crash. I had enough worries running through my head; I didn’t want to add to them. I sat in the passenger seat, my hands clasped in my lap. I looked out the window.

“What are you thinking over there?”

“Everything,” I sighed. “Why did Ace want you to do a job up here?”

“He thinks there’s a human trafficking auction here in town, and he wants me to figure out who’s a part of it and bring it down. Now, I’d love to go in guns blazing, but Ace demanded differently. For some reason, he wants things done correctly. To get into this auction, I needed an invite, which I got from that buyer at the bar. He won’t think anything of it, especially with you there.”

“Why?”

“Word has gotten out about Alan and your return. Many men in our business most likely think you were sold back into the hands of the family.”

“But I wasn’t,” I said quickly.

“No, you weren’t. But being in a place like that definitely gives off that idea. It wasn’t what I was going for, but I’ll work with it all the same.”

“When is the auction?”

“Tomorrow night. I’m just going to get names. Nothing more, nothing less.”

“Dominic isn’t on your side for this, is he?

“No, he thinks we should stay out of it,” Zevon answered as we pulled into a fast food place. “What would you like?”
