I was able to talk to everyone else, for the most part. I could give more than a one- or two-word answer. But to Caesar, I didn’t knowhowto talk to him. He still frightened me, even after all he’d done by going out of his way for me.
A soft knock on the door forced me out of my thoughts. I looked up, finding Dominic in the doorway. His eyes took in my room before they landed on me.
“I hear you’re meeting with a lawyer?”
“Yeah,” I answered, clearing my throat. Why was I so nervous all of a sudden? Was it because of who called? Was it because I hadn’t once left this house in the week and half I’d been here? Or was it something else?
“I think it’d do you some good to get out of this house for a bit, anyhow. I know I’m nearly going out of my mind with being stuck in one place.”
I didn’t know what to do or what to say. Too much and nothing all at once ran through my head.
“How long do you need to get ready to head out?”
“Not too long. Like, five minutes,” I shrugged.
“Okay then. I’ll meet you in the living room when you’re ready.”
“All right.”
Dominic left the room, and I got up. After brushing my hair out, letting it fall down around my shoulders and back, I slipped on my flip-flops. What I wore would have to make do since my options were pretty limited at best for the summer months.
“Have fun, kids,” Collin said from the kitchen. He had a computer out, typing away. He always seemed to be busy doing something.
I followed Dominic to a small sports car. I raised my eyebrow at it as he held the passenger door for me.
“With Zevon gone so much the last few days, we had to make sure we have another car,” he said as I slipped in. “Plus, this one I got to buy.”
“Buy?”
“Yep. This baby is my new thing.” He seemed so proud of that fact.
Boys. That’s all I could say.
Once he was in the driver’s seat, he started the car and we were quickly off. The dirt flew up behind us. I held onto the seat belt tightly, thinking I may have to fear for my life. But other than fear, something I had never felt before was bubbling at the surface.
“Do you know how to drive?” he asked, turning a corner too sharply. The car jerked to the side and I gasped. A small squeak even escaped my parted lips.
“Yeah,” I said, my heart in my throat. “Better than you can.”
“What’s wrong with my driving?” He sounded appalled.
“You’re trying to kill us!”
“No. I’m making driving a thrill,” he laughed, shooting me a sideways wink.
“Well, I don’t know if I like it,” I huffed.
He slowed as we reached the town. There were a ton of high-end houses with perfect lawns. I could only imagine what any of them looked like inside.
“Wanna stop at Target?”
“Uh, sure?” Why?”
“You need clothes. Figured we may make a trip out of this.”
“I’m okay. I don’t need anything.”
“Scarlett,” he sighed, looking over at me as we stopped at a light. “Ace said to get you what you needed. And what you want. Clothes are a need.”
