Of course,I thought. Most likely place to try to hide and get an up on me.

Bypassing everything, I walked with purpose to the master bathroom. I turned the doorknob before flinging the door open, letting it crash against the wall, leaving an indentation.

Once the door was open, the room was empty. Cody wasn’t there.

My heart sunk to the pit of my stomach, knowing I was being played.

In the next second, I froze as the sound of a gun being cocked right behind me before the muzzle met my side in a sharp poke.

“I wasn’t planning to hide, nor run,” Cody stated.

Keeping my gun in front of me, I stood in my place. I didn’t dare move. Not yet.

“What do you want?” I asked, my voice a bit louder than normal. My breathing was shallow as I played out ways to get out of this situation in my head. Biding every second right now counted. This, right here, is what I was waiting for. I wanted a good fight.

“What is mine,” Cody said, jabbing the gun against me.

“Which is what, exactly?” I asked out.

“Don’t play games with me!” he shouted, angry.

“You are the one that broke into my house,” I stated, my voice clear. “And now you’re threatening my life.”

“I am not threatening you, because your life will be gone soon,” Cody said, sounding proud of that fact.

“You really think so?” I laughed out, not afraid of this man.

“Yes,” he stated. “I just want my daughter back.”

“She’s not here,” I lied. “She couldn’t give me what I needed, so I got rid of her.”

“You lie!” Cody yelled.

“She wasn’t what I wanted; what I needed,” I stated, waiting for that moment he’d second guess himself.

He paused, thinking over my words. That was all I needed as I flipped around, quickly taking the gun from his hands, leaving him clueless. He had no idea how to truly carry such a weapon.

His wide eyes peered at me in fear as he realized just what I had done. He fell into his own trap, and now he’d pay.

“So, Cody, what do you really want with my wife?” I asked, pointing my gun at his head. A smile crossed my lips as I saw him nearly piss his pants right where he stood.

“To protect her!” he yelled in fear this time.

With his back to the door, he didn’t see Travis come up behind him, hitting him across the back of the head. In a second, Cody fell to the floor unconscious.

“About damn time,” I grunted out, lowering my gun. I really hadn’t wanted to shoot the man. Yet. I needed answers before I killed him.

“Yeah, well,” Melio shrugged. “Better late than never.”

“Why’d you bring that car here, anyhow?” I asked, taking a step and kicking Cody’s leg a bit harder than I should have. I wanted to make sure he really was out cold before attempting to move him anywhere.

“It’s the car I was driving when you called. What else was I to do?” Travis answered. “What car did you want us to drive when we are working at the club?”

“Forget it,” I brushed it off. “Have either of you checked on Avidya?”

“She’s not here. The house is completely cleared,” Melio answered. “Let’s get him down to the kitchen.”

“You two do that. I’m gonna go check on my wife,” I stated, walking out of the room and passing Jonas in the hallway

“Where is she?” Travis called after me.

“In my office,” I answered over my shoulder.

“No, she’s not!” Travis said.

“There’s more to this house than meets the eye,” I called before making my way down the stairs.
