I searched the grounds, desperate for someone—anyone—to explain. Reaching inward, I called upon the air and fire elements. Nothing. Not a flicker of connection.

Nomarekem. No dragon bond. No elements.

“This is a place without magic.” The words left me hollow.

I turned to Fallon Fitzroy. She stood with her arms crossed, the sun catching on the purple gems set in her metal headband—undoubtedly my brother’s craftsmanship. Her eyes shone with unshed tears, though she forced them back, refusing to break.

We spun toward the sound. A tall woman leaned casually against the stone wall, long curls of brown hair spilling over her shoulders. She wore leathers I didn’t recognize, her brown eyes sharp as steel—yet her smile was disarmingly warm.
