Blake finally turned from Sarah to look at Henry. I was getting worried as to why he wasn’t looking at me or standing beside me. How did he feel about our exes being together? ‘I’m not, and never have been, your mate.’
‘They’re ready,’ Henry’s mum called out then. She was all smiles and she gave me a little wave, but before I had time to wave back – not that I was going to – she’d turned around like I’d already been forgotten.
‘Ready for what? We don’t want you here!’ Willow cried, shaking her head.
‘You owe us,’ Henry said coldly. ‘All of you. You were cheating on us the whole time, I bet. And you were all in cahoots,’ he added, glaring at Willow. ‘My father has given you plenty of money. We won’t be here long. We don’t want to be around any of you longer than we have to but this is important to us. This is where we met; it’s special.’
‘We weren’t cheating on you!’ I cried. ‘I never met Blake before I came here the day of our wedding!’
‘You two deserve each other,’ Henry said, ignoring me, and hurried over to Sarah.
‘What can we do?’ Willow asked us. ‘Can we call the police? Or you and Dylan could kick them out?’ she demanded of Blake. ‘I’m not an advocate for violence usually but…’
‘I understand your feeling, believe me,’ I told her.
‘It’s too late to do any of that,’ Blake said then, pointing. Willow and I turned around to see Henry joining Sarah at the flower arch. They faced one another.
The photographer crouched down by them and told them he was ready.
We all stared as Henry got down on one knee and pulled out a small jewellery box. Sarah gasped and put her hands over her mouth, looking shocked, although from the fact that their parents and a photographer were here, she can’t have been surprised at all.
‘Are they actually…?’ Willow whispered beside me.
I nodded because it looked like they were. I glanced at Blake, who was shaking his head at the spectacle. I turned back to Henry and watched as he pulled out a diamond ring and asked Sarah to marry him.
She gasped out, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’ and he slid the ring on her finger before jumping up and kissing her. Then he picked her up, twirling her while pictures were furiously snapped.
‘The audacity to do this here,’ Willow said, shaking her head.
‘I assume they are trying to prove that they are over us.’ I was kind of amused now. Did Henry think I cared about this show he was putting on for me? ‘It feels fake, don’t you think?’ I turned to Blake but he had stridden off. My stomach sunk. Was he upset about this? I hurried after him to find out.
‘Don’t leave me with them!’ Willow cried after us. She swore under her breath. I felt bad for the invasion of her farm but I was worried about what was going through Blake’s mind.
Blake finally stopped by the chicken pen and leaned on the fence.
‘Why did you walk off?’ I asked. ‘And you didn’t seem to want to be near me back there…’
‘I wasn’t sure you wanted them to know about us,’ he replied.
‘I can’t believe they’re together,’ I said, trying to decipher his mood. ‘I can’t believe they’reengaged.’
‘It’s crazy. They only just met.’
‘Do you think they’re trying to get revenge on us? They think we care that they’re together? They want to show us they’re fine without us?’
He shrugged. ‘I don’t care about them. I care about us. How do you feel seeing Henry and knowing he’s moved on already?’
‘I can’t believe they’re actually in love, but they can do whatever they want. I don’t care about Henry or Sarah any more, but I care about us.’ I cared more about Blake than I thought I ever could about someone again.
‘Really?’ Blake turned to me hopefully. ‘What if we’re rushing into things just as much as they are?’
‘You think we are?’ I asked worriedly.
‘All I know is, I almost proposed to Sarah and you were about to get married to Henry. Watching them just now made me worry… we’re not each other’s rebound, are we?’
That question made me hesitate. He was right that things between us had been quick, just like Sarah and Henry. But I had let Blake into my heart in a way I’d never done with Henry. And my feelings for Blake were real. Last night had been perfect.
I shook my head. ‘No. People saw our connection so much, they thought we were seeing each other when we’d only just met! Henry still thinks we’ve known each other years. We have something special. We felt it all along, didn’t we?’
