When the sound of footfalls in the corridor floats through my apartment, I yank the door open, expecting to see jade green eyes staring back at me, when—
“Hello, Max.”
Casey.
Chapter Sixty-Four
Max
“Casey.” Her name comes out like a slap. “What are you doing here?”
The question hits her like a blow, her smile wavering. “You haven’t been responding to any of my calls or texts.”
“Because I blocked you, Casey.” My grip tightens on the door handle. “How did you find me?”
She blinks, taken aback by my question.
“How did you find me?” I repeat, my voice low.
“Anna’s Instagram stories,” she supplies.
I frown, confused. “I don’t understand. How did you—”
“She tagged the wedding venue,” she rushes to explain. “And then I saw your car leaving, so I—” She straightens her back, lifting her chin. “Well, I followed you.”
“Youfollowedme?” My voice drops dangerously low as I fight to contain my anger. “Are you out of yourbloodymind?”
I step forward and she retreats, her back hitting the hallway wall. “Max, please. We need to talk,” she begs.
“You can’t be here.” I start to close the door, but she lunges forward, trapping her foot in the threshold.
“I needed to see you. Max, please.” Her hands fly up to fist my shirt as she clings to me desperately.
Instinctively, I lift my hands to pry her manicured fingers off me when—
Ding.
The elevator doors slide open painstakingly slow, and I feel the ground beneath me dissolve.
Gemma.
She freezes, all the color bleeding from her face as she takes in the scene before her.
I see the moment I lose her, her emotions switching off.
No.
“Gemma,” I say, cautious.
Her arm moves as she jabs the elevator button once.
“No, Gemma, wait—it’s not what—”
The doors begin to close.
I rip Casey off me and sprint, but I’m two steps too late.
“FUCK!” I roar as my fist smashes against the cool steel as it shuts between us.
