“Nurse, the captive has awakened.”

The floor beneath their feet rumbled. None of them appeared fazed by that.

“Where am I…” I whispered.

“Quiet the prisoner,” another nurse with a scratchy voice rasped.

They must have given me something because I fell asleep again. I woke up to more rumbling, nurses hissing and chattering in some strange language that I could only understand when I was more awake. I propped my body up, scanning my environment. They’d taken me captive. If Kronos knew, there would be hell to pay. They’d never get away with this. I had to convince myself that were true.

Any other alternative was downright terrifying. Any other alternative meant I was totally screwed.

I tried to get up. A nurse came up to me, her eyes sharp and reptilian.

“You must not move.”

“You’ve kidnapped me. I’m warning you, you’d better let me go.”

“We cannot let you go, child. Now you lie there.”

“I’m pregnant.”

“Pregnant?” The nurse seemed shocked.

“Yes. I’m pregnant.”

She scowled.

“That idiot!”

“What is it, Firuza?” The other nurse asked.

“He captured a human female that has already been mated.”

“What should we do?”

“We do nothing. If my father hears what he’s done, he’ll punish him. He might be an idiot, but he’s still my brother.”

Ah, so her brother was a kidnapper and she was a nurse for him. Great family values, there.

“Please, you need to let me go…”

I attempted a plea for my life. It was all I had.

“I’m afraid we cannot do that. It is not to our advantage.”

“Please…”

TWELVE

JESS

The confederates had new technology.Their alliance with the aberrant Arietan sects hadn’t only been rumor. When they boarded the ship, we armed ourselves but by the time I fought my way through the corridors to our quarters, Jess was gone. I didn’t have time to grieve or examine the area before the doors slid open and three Taurean males, towering over me with their long, thick horns.

I hoisted my weapon and fired at one right in his chest. His metal plating shattered and he was left vulnerable. The other swung his tail at me, readying to pierce me with his toxic barbs. I ducked and then I reached into their minds…

I’d only meant to disable them at first but open the telepathic connection between us opened me up to my anger. They’d taken my love. My Jessica. My pregnant mate. My eyes snapped open, the yellow glow casting beams on the floor as they screamed and fell to their knees.
