“That’s what you think I’m doing?”

She shrugged and pulled a pair of jeans from her closet. “I don’t know what you’re doing. You just…poof. Disappeared on me.”

“Clearly, I didn’t just poof disappear, because unbeknownst to my human side, my wolf was dragging my ass to your territory at night to mark it. He was marking you. I don’t even remember driving here.”

“How does your wolf know where I live?”

“You said you live on Hanover that night we had our date. He probably just looked for your car.”

“Oh. Right. So, you just like…sleep-walked here? Or…sleep-drove?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never done this before. I’ve been fighting with my animal and it’s been a little…intense.”

“Why are you fighting with your wolf?”

“Because of you.”

Destiny had been pulling her jeans on under her grandma nighty but stopped before she had them buttoned. She straightened her spine. “Why?”

“Because he just wants to be with you and wants to protect you and that’s that. There is no logic. There’s just want. He wants you, and the more I fight it, the more he undermines me.”

“So your human side doesn’t feel that for me?”

“My human side understands the danger and understands our differences. I understand the risk you would be taking if I keep pulling you in.”

“So, you like me, but you don’twantto like me,” she guessed.

He nodded. “Something like that.”

“What am I supposed to do with that, Dodger?”

He inhaled deeply and leaned back on her bed on locked arms. Her frame creaked under his shifting weight. “I don’t honestly know.”

“So, all of this because I’m human?” she asked, sitting down on the floor.

“No. Not all. I wouldn’t even want to bring a werewolf female into my Pack’s dynamics right now. We were attacked the other night.”

She frowned. “Is everyone okay?”

“They set fire to my Alpha’s house and destroyed one of the rooms of a cabin.” He scratched his cheek and looked at the carpet. “There were injuries.”

“Was anyone killed?” she asked.

“Not anyone from my Pack.” He looked at her like he was gauging her reaction.

And it dawned on her. “Was that why you kept checking your phone when we were out together? Your Pack was trying to get ahold of you?”

A single nod, and then, “I ignored my Pack’s messages. Ignored my Alpha’s call.”

“Why did they attack your people?” she asked, horrified.

“To punish us. Guess who they went after?”

“Your human?” she whispered.

“Our human. They went after her den and then destroyed a room on Delta’s home she shares with Nate. My home wasn’t touched. They targeted the females. They know that’s the way to hurt the Pack the most.”

“Oh my gosh,” she murmured, drawing her legs up as her mind raced. No wonder he hadn’t wanted to bring her into that.
