“I saw this coming, Reyansh,” she said calmly. “But can I at least understand the reasons behind your decision?”

Her composed response caught me off guard. She deserved honesty, at least that much. Fulfilling what felt like my last responsibility as her boyfriend, I decided to tell her everything.

“I’ll be honest, Aditi. I made several messed-up decisions. I mistook attraction for liking and recklessly decided to date you. You were wonderful to be with, which made me assume my feelings would grow. Instead, I was filled with guilt because my heart belonged to another, Amyra. I craved closeness with her, failing to realize my true feelings until it was too late.

I dragged this relationship for eight months, leading you on. My biggest regret is asking you to date me and giving youhope. I tried to distance myself from Amyra, but I was drawn back to her. The guilt of pretending to be your boyfriend gnawed at me, so I decided to put a stop to this and seek your forgiveness.”

“Can apologizing undo the damage?” she asked quietly.

“No.”

She looked away, then met my eyes. “I liked being with you. I hoped for something lasting, but accepting this feels painful.” I realized too late that I was messing everything up. Ending this looks like the only right choice.

“How miserable is it,” she said, “that my boyfriend fell in love with my sister?”

“I feel the same way about dating your sister. I messed up and hurt both of us.”

“Though this is heartbreaking, I’m glad you were honest. I agree to break up, but I can’t promise forgiveness right now.”

I could see the heartbreak in her eyes. “I’ll wait for your forgiveness. Thank you for letting me go.” I moved closer and wrapped my arms around her. “I’m sincerely sorry for playing with your feelings, Aditi.”

Something broke inside her. She hugged me back, her tears soaking into my chest as she cried quietly for a few minutes before pulling away, creating distance again.

“I’ll always remember you as my best experience in a relationship, Reyansh. I don’t think I can get anyone as good as you in my life. I realise we’re just not meant for each other.” A faint, fragile smile touches her lips. I returned it.

“I feel the same, Aditi. You were too perfect for me, more than I deserved. I hope you find a love that cherishes you forever.” A sarcastic chuckle escaped her, but I knew her soulmate existed somewhere in this vast world.

“For now, I just want to focus on my studies abroad. One of my dream universities approved my application, and it’s under process.”

“That’s incredible news. The moment you’ve waited for has finally arrived. I’m genuinely happy for you and wish you all the best.”

“Thank you. I hope it becomes the distraction I need right now. But tell me, when are you planning to confess to my Amyra Di?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t planned anything yet, and honestly, I’m scared of her reaction.”

The fear of losing Amyra felt heavier than anything I’ve ever known.

“You’ll never know unless you try, Reyansh. Just go for it. Who knows, maybe Amyra Di has been waiting for this moment too.”

Her words sounded sincere and hopeful. But I knew better. I doubted Amyra would welcome the truth about me breaking up with her sister to confess my love for her.

“Thank you for supporting me despite how deeply I hurt you. I hope I get the right chance to tell her how I feel.”

“You will.”

I might have made countless mistakes in my life, despite always trying to be careful, calculated, and guarded. But in the end, the heart wants what it wants.

Present

How did my life turn upside down so suddenly?

The man I believed never even saw me as a woman is now confessing that he has been in love with me all along. I thought I had been sidelined in his heart, quietly existing on the edges, but here he is, admitting how deeply his feelings for me grew in silence.

What is happening right now?
