I feel my voice rising, and I see how she tenses.
“Can’t you focus on your own life instead of intruding into mine? Some things take time.”
I wrap my arm around her waist, gently pulling her closer, wanting her to see my seriousness.
“Amyra, you mean the world to me.”
“Are you serious? What are you talking about?”
She pushes against my chest, trying to create space, but I hold her firm, our bodies just touching. I want her to hear me.
“This truth has been with me for years. I can’t keep it inside anymore. I need you to know how I feel.” With us about to be sent to different branches, I know this is my moment.
“What are you saying?” she asks, her voice sharp, but I stand my ground.
“I’m deeply in love with you, Amyra.” In that instant, she shoves me away, looking horrified.
“How can you say that? You’re with my sister!” Her eyes are wide, fear written all over her face.
“This isn’t right, Reyansh. How could you do this to her?”
“I ended things with Aditi.”
“What?!” Her tears flow as disbelief takes over, and I feel the weight of my confession.
“Yes, Amyra. I broke up with Aditi three days ago.”
Her reaction hits hard, a sharp slap echoes in the room, and I touch my cheek, feeling the sting. When I look at her again, she’s crumpling inward, hands over her mouth, trembling with silent sobs. In that moment, I wonder if I will ever be forgiven for the paths I’ve taken.
Chapter 32
Reyansh
Three days ago
“So tell me whatever you wanted to say a week ago, Reyansh.”
Aditi looked different from the way I’d left her last week, but in a good way. Her face carried a newfound strength and quiet determination. We sat across from each other at the same lakeside café we used to visit often, the familiar scent of coffee and damp earth hanging in the air.
It was she who had messaged me yesterday, reminding me of the meeting we’d decided on last week.
“First, there are a few things I need to say before I confess something important.”
“What are they?”
“Whatever I’ve decided about our relationship, whatever I think is purely based on how I feel, not on how you made me feel. You’ve been the best girlfriend I could ever ask for. This decision comes from my own heart and mind.” I could feel my voice tremble with nerves, but Aditi’s expression remained unchanged.
“Can you stop speaking in circles and get to the point?” You can do this, Reyansh. Just do it.
I exhaled slowly, took a deep breath, and braced myself for the storm I was about to invite.
“I’m extremely sorry, but I don’t think I can continue this relationship anymore. I want to break up with you.” There it is. I’d said it.
There was no shock on her face, no surprise, only silent acceptance. She must have seen it coming. Of course she did. I’d already been distant, less invested in bonding with her. She would’ve noticed the way my eyes lingered on Amyra, the way my behaviour shifted whenever she was around.
I must have hurt Aditi long before this moment, but she kept it to herself, choosing not to assume.
‘Can I say I’m the worst boyfriend ever?’
