I'm about to hang up when my mouth betrays me. "Hey, Mamma? Can I bring a friend?"
The silence on the other end is deafening. Then, "A friend?"

"A girl?" Her voice has gone up an octave. "Sebastiano, are you seeing someone? Why didn't you tell me? What's her name? What does she study? Is she?—"
