"We did." I sighed, feeling the weight of my unrequited love for Erica settle back on my shoulders. "But she found her fated mate in Liam, and there's no place for me in that equation."
"Love is a complicated thing, especially in our world," Audrey murmured, reaching out to brush her fingers against my cheek. "But I want you to know that I understand your feelings. And I'm here for you, Damon, as a friend and confidante."
"Maybe I just have a habit of falling for other men's fated mates," I joked, trying to lighten the mood as I traced my fingers across her spine. "First you, then Erica." Audrey chuckled softly and turned to look at me with a knowing smile.
"You'll be so surprised when you meet 'her,' Damon," she said cryptically.
"Who's 'her'?" I asked, curiosity piqued.
"Your fated mate," Audrey replied with a certainty that sent a shiver down my spine. I scoffed, unconvinced.
"I'm 28 years old, Audrey. If I had a fated mate, wouldn't I have met her by now?"
"Age doesn't determine when you find your mate, Damon," she said gently, her fingers tracing lines on my chest. "And yes, you do have one. You will meet her." My heart raced, torn between hope and scepticism.
"How can you be so sure?"
"Years ago, I saw her in a vision," Audrey confessed, her voice barely more than a whisper. "That's why I didn't want to get too close to you back then."
Her words hung heavy in the air, leaving me to grapple with their implications. The thought of a fated mate I hadn't met yet was both thrilling and terrifying. Would she accept me? And what if it was too late?
"Visions can be tricky things, Audrey," I said slowly, trying to wrap my head around the idea. "What if it was just a dream or wishful thinking?"
"Trust me, Damon," she insisted, her gaze intense and unwavering. "This was no ordinary dream. It was as real as you and me lying here right now. She's out there, waiting for you." As much as I wanted to believe her, doubt gnawed at me. I'd spent too many years waiting, hoping for that elusive connection to materialise out of thin air. It felt like a cruel joke the universe was playing on me.
"Alright," I sighed, deciding to indulge her for the moment. "Let's say you're right and I do have a fated mate out there. What does she look like? What's her name?" Audrey shook her head, her dark hair cascading over her shoulder.
"That's not how visions work, Damon. I saw only glimpses, impressions. Enough to know she exists, but not enough to give you any specifics. You'll just have to trust in fate."
"Trust in fate?" I repeated with a wry smile. "That's rich, coming from someone who can see the future."
"Only parts of it, flashing glimpses," she countered, poking me playfully in the chest. "The rest is up to us to discover."
My mind raced, struggling to process Audrey's revelation. The thought of having a fated mate out there was both thrilling and terrifying. But for now, here I was, lying next to this bewitching woman who had been an unexpected part of my life for so long.
"Alright then," I murmured, my voice heavy with a mix of desire and uncertainty. "It looks like I better make the most of you while I can." I leaned in and pressed my lips to her neck, feeling her pulse quicken beneath them. Audrey giggled softly, her body shivering with anticipation as I continued to trail slow, sensual kisses down her collarbone and along the exposed curve of her breast. My fingers traced patterns on her skin, never quite touching the places I knew would make her moan but teasing close enough to elicit small gasps and sighs.
"Dammit, Damon," she whispered, her breath hitching as I nipped gently at her side. "You always know how to drive me crazy."
"Isn't that what I'm here for?" I asked, smirking against her skin before leaving another searing kiss just above her navel. Every inch of her felt like forbidden territory, and I revelled in the knowledge that for now, at least, she was mine to explore. As I continued my descent, I couldn't help but think about what it meant to have a fated mate waiting for me somewhere. Would I recognize her when we met? Would our connection be instant, like a lightning strike, or would we need time to untangle the threads of destiny that bound us together?
"Stop thinking so much," Audrey chastised me gently, her fingers threading through my hair as if she could sense the turmoil inside me. "You're here with me now. Enjoy it."
"Right," I agreed, forcing myself to focus on the taste of her skin and the heat of her body pressed against mine. My heart ached with a mixture of love and regret, but I pushed the emotions aside, determined to savour every moment we had left together.
Just as I was about to indulge in the sweet taste of Audrey's skin, the loud knocking on the bedroom door shattered the intimate atmosphere like glass. Groaning, I reluctantly lifted my head from her thigh and exchanged a frustrated glance with Audrey. She sighed deeply, mourning the loss of our moment together.
"It’s for you," she whispered, her voice husky with desire. Audrey gracefully slid out of bed, wrapping herself in a silk dressing gown that shimmered over her curves like moonlight on water. With one last lingering look at me, she opened the bathroom door and stepped in. My jeans lay crumpled on the floor where I'd discarded them earlier, and I hastily pulled them on, my fingers fumbling with the buttons.
"Dammit, Liam," I muttered under my breath, though I knew it wasn't his fault. He had no idea what he was interrupting.
"Is everything okay?" I called out, my voice tight with tension.
"Uh... yeah," came Liam's anxious reply, and I could hear the distress lacing his words. My heart clenched with worry for my friend. "We just... we need to go home right now, Damon."
"Right now?" I repeated, struggling to grasp the urgency behind his demand.
"Please," he insisted. "There's something wrong. We have to go."
