"Come on, let's get you settled in," Gen said, guiding me inside the apartment.
The moment we entered my old apartment, a wave of nostalgia washed over me. The familiar scent of home, now tainted with the bitter aftertaste of betrayal and secrets, engulfed me.
"Hey," Frankie greeted softly, concern etched on her face. My gaze shifted to Verity, who was standing beside her. I hadn't expected to see her here, but it was a welcome surprise.
"Verity's staying in your old room," Kaitlyn informed me, trying to sound casual. "But if you want it back..."
"No," I shook my head, wiping the remnants of my tears away. "I just need to be with all of you right now."
"Of course," Verity replied, understanding dawning on her face. "You've got us, Erica. Always." We settled down on the sofas as Gen went to put on a chick flick, one of her favorites. The light-hearted movie seemed almost out of place given the heaviness that weighed on my heart, but I appreciated the effort to bring a sense of normalcy to our gathering. The laughter from the chick flick danced around the room, mingling with the gentle hum of conversation between my friends. As I leaned back into the soft embrace of the couch, I felt the weight of the day's revelations finally begin to ebb away. In this moment, surrounded by those I loved and trusted, I allowed myself to feel safe.
"Hey, if you're tired, you should get some rest," Frankie suggested, her voice a soothing balm.
"Maybe I will," I murmured, my eyelids already growing heavy.
"Sweet dreams, Erica," Gen whispered, giving me a tender smile. As sleep claimed me, the cheerful chatter of my friends and the flickering light of the TV screen melted away, replaced by an eerie stillness that echoed through an ominous landscape. The air was thick with tension, and I shivered involuntarily, recognizing the familiar cliff top from my previous dream. I knew I had returned to this haunting place for a reason.
Chapter 32
Erica
Thecoldwindwhippedthrough my hair as I stood atop the cliff, the salty sea spray stinging my cheeks. My heart hammered in my chest, and I knew I was back in that dreaded dream again. Frantically, I searched for Jasper and Liam, memories of their hands on me, of being pushed off the edge, flooding my mind.
"Jasper? Liam?" My voice trembled, barely audible above the roar of the waves crashing below. The fear coiled in my gut, threatening to consume me. But I had to stay strong; I couldn't let them see how much they terrified me.
"Where are you?" I called out again, more boldly this time. My green eyes scanned the rocky landscape, searching for any sign of them. But the only answer was the lonely cry of a distant seagull, mocking my desperation.
My heart raced as I took in the eerie sight before me. The clifftop seemed to stretch endlessly, its rocky edge disappearing into a swirling mass of shadows and fog. It was both terrifying and strangely beautiful, like something out of a dark fairy tale. I forced myself to focus on the movement further along the cliff. With each step, the wind tugged at my hair, whispering secrets I couldn't quite grasp. As I drew nearer, I noticed the cage, two separate cages, in fact, their bars twisted together like the limbs of an ancient, gnarled tree. There was something inside each cage, but the darkness obscured their forms.
"Who's there?" I called out, my voice wavering. There was no response, only the howling wind and the distant crashing of waves against the rocks below. Anxiety gnawed at the pit of my stomach. I turned to walk away from the cages when a guttural growl ripped through the air, followed by the snarl of a beast. My heart leapt into my throat as I threw my arms up to shield myself, but the impact never came.
Trembling, I lowered my arms and saw the beast: a monstrous creature with black fur matted with blood, its eyes glowing red with pure malice. A luminous chain wrapped around its neck, keeping it from lunging any closer to me. I stumbled back, putting as much distance between the beast and myself as possible. Then more beasts emerged from the shadows, their snarls echoing across the clifftop. Each one appeared more menacing than the last, with bared teeth that glistened in the moonlight and claws that scraped against the ground, leaving deep gouges in their wake. They strained against their chains, the links glowing like molten lava as they attempted to break free.
"What do you want?" I demanded, my voice barely audible above the wind and snarls. My body ached with the need to flee, but I stood my ground, refusing to let these creatures see my fear. My back pressed against the cold metal bars of the cage, my breaths coming out in ragged gasps. I was trapped between the snarling beasts and the mysterious cages, fear coursing through me like wildfire. My heart raced, pounding against my chest as if it were trying to break free. A low growl echoed from behind me, and I spun around to see a wolf inside one of the cages. She was breathtakingly beautiful, her fur glowing a soft, ethereal white, and her eyes so pale gold they seemed almost white. Every instinct told me I should be afraid, but instead, a warmth spread through me, chasing away the icy tendrils of fear. This was my wolf, and I knew it with every fibre of my being.
"Hello," I whispered, holding my hand out tentatively. The wolf padded over gracefully, sniffing at my fingers before nuzzling into my palm. A surge of joy and connection washed over me, grounding me in the moment despite the terrifying circumstances.
A chuckle resonated from the other cage, and I turned to see a woman emerging from the shadows. She looked like me, but more striking, more captivating, as if she held some secret power that hummed beneath the surface. Her green eyes sparkled with an intensity that made me feel both awestruck and uneasy.
"Finally," she said, her voice rich and velvety. "She has been waiting a long time for this moment."
"Who are you?" I asked, unable to tear my gaze away from her.
"Isn't it obvious?" she replied, a knowing smile playing on her lips. "I am you. And she,” she gestured toward the glowing wolf still nestled against my hand, "is also you. We have both been waiting so long for this moment." Confusion laced with anxiety swirled inside me as I tried to make sense of her words.
"How can that be? I don't understand."
"Perhaps it's not for you to understand right now," she said cryptically, the smile never leaving her face. "But know this: we are all connected. We are all a part of you, and you are a part of us." I struggled to process her explanation, my mind racing with questions. Why was this happening now? What did it all mean? I glanced back at the snarling beasts still held at bay by their chains, feeling a shiver run down my spine.
"And exactly who are you?" I asked the ethereal woman, my voice trembling with a mix of fear and awe. She smiled warmly, her eyes sparkling with a strange energy.
"I am the witch side of you," she said, pointing to the wolf beside me, "and this is your wolf side." I shook my head in disbelief, my heart pounding against my chest.
"That's impossible. I don't have a witch side. I'm just a werewolf who can't even shift." Her smile deepened, and there was a knowing look in her eyes.
"But here I am," she insisted, her voice gentle yet firm. "You've always known deep down that you were different, haven't you?” I scoffed, feeling a surge of bitterness rise within me.
"Sure, being a werewolf who can't shift isn't different enough?" A shadow of sadness crossed her face as she touched the bars of the cage, her fingers trailing along the cold metal.
