"We're lost. I followed the sat nav, but it's taken us to this dead end..." He gestured out the windshield at the imposing cliff that loomed before us.
"Relax," I said, smirking as I assessed the situation. "Drive forward. Trust me." Liam looked dubious but did as I instructed, inching the car closer to the base of the cliff. As we moved forward, the seemingly solid rock face seemed to shimmer and distort before our eyes. In its place, a large Victorian house materialised, standing proud and mysterious atop the rocky terrain.
"Whoa," Liam breathed, his eyes wide as he stared at the house. "Is that...?"
"Yep," I confirmed, grinning. "Audrey's home."
"Guess you were right about the illusions and shit," Liam muttered. He then glanced down at the spade still resting in the back seat. “Now I wanna know what that is all about.”
"Sometimes, there's more to things than meets the eye," I replied, a hint of amusement in my voice.
Liam pulled up to the front entrance of the imposing Victorian house, and I couldn't help but feel a thrill of anticipation. As he parked the car, I glanced at my reflection in the side mirror, running my fingers through my hair, attempting to tame the unruly dark strands.
"Planning a hot date or something?" Liam asked, giving me an amused side-eye as he turned off the engine. His tone was teasing, but I could sense his underlying curiosity.
"When you meet Audrey," I replied with a grin, "you'll understand." We climbed out of the car, stretching our legs and dusting off our clothes after the long drive. The wind whipped around us, carrying a strange energy that seemed to permeate the very air surrounding the house. It was a testament to Audrey's power; even her home radiated with it.
Before we could take another step towards the house, a loud bang shook the ground beneath our feet, rattling my bones and sending a shockwave through the air. A distinct smell of sulphur filled our nostrils, and I immediately knew something was wrong.
"Shit!" I swore, my heart pounding in my chest as I grabbed the spade from the backseat and took off towards the house. I could hear Liam's footsteps behind me, but I didn't have time to worry about him. My thoughts were consumed by Audrey and what on earth she could be up to now.
Chapter 3
Liam
IfollowedDamonthroughthe house, my nerves on edge as he led me towards the basement. The old, creaky staircase groaned beneath our weight, casting eerie shadows across the walls as if the house itself were alive and breathing. I couldn't help but shudder, feeling as though we were delving into some forbidden place. As we rounded the corner at the bottom of the stairs, the basement came into full view; a glowing, pulsating stone doorway stood tall at the other end of the room. I swore under my breath in shock at the sight before us. Four figures were cast in shadow by the light from the door, three appeared human, while one was a large, beast-like creature.
"Dammit, Damon," I muttered, clenching my fists. "What the hell is going on?"
"Keep your voice down, Liam," he hissed back, his dark eyes scanning the scene warily.
"Who are they?" I asked, trying to keep my voice low despite the anger boiling inside me. I didn't trust this situation or these mysterious figures, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right.
"From what I can see some of the high-ranking members of the Willowvane coven," he replied cryptically, his gaze never leaving the middle figure in front of the portal. "They're the ones who are going to help us."
"By summoning a demon?" I shot back, my pulse racing with adrenaline. My wolf stirred within me, eager for a fight. Damon rolled his eyes and pointed to the glowing doorway.
“That’s a portal to a hell dimension,” he whispered. “They are stopping it from escaping, not summoning it, dickhead.”
I took in the chaotic scene before me. The three human figures appeared to be fighting the monstrous beast, a demon, from the looks of it, with everything they had. The woman in the centre held her hand up toward the creature, and what seemed like fire erupted from her fingertips. The other two flanked her, heads bowed and lips moving in unison as they chanted words I couldn't understand.
"Fuck," I muttered under my breath, feeling helpless. My wolf snarled inside me, urging me to act, but I knew I needed a plan if we were going to make it out of this alive.
As if sensing my hesitation, the demon broke free with terrifying force, tossing one of the chanters across the room like a rag doll. It barreled towards the woman in the middle, its blood-curdling roar echoing off the walls. I could feel the fear rolling off of her in waves, fueling the beast's rage.
"Shit," I cursed, realising that I couldn't waste any more time. I glanced at Damon, who shot me a quick nod, and together we raced toward the fray.
"Get back!" the woman yelled as she spotted us approaching, the fire in her hands growing brighter and hotter. But there was no turning back now, not with people’s lives on the line.
"Get them to safety," I told Damon as I sprinted forward, my legs pumping faster than ever before. "I'll distract this ugly bastard."
"Be careful, Liam," he replied, his voice tight with concern. I could only hope that whatever connection he shared with these strangers would help keep them from harm. As the demon lunged for the woman, I leaped into its path, dodging its razor-sharp claws by mere inches. It snarled in frustration, its focus now solely on me. Good, I thought grimly. Let's dance.
"Hey, ugly!" I taunted, ducking and weaving as it tried to swipe at me again. "You really think you're a match for an Alpha werewolf?" The demon roared in response, its grotesque features twisting with rage. It was clear that it didn't understand my words, but it didn't matter, the intent behind them was enough. The Demon got a good hit, and I went crashing into some old furniture across the room.
"Dammit!" Damon swore, his voice laced with frustration as he eyed the advancing demon heading straight for his friend. In a heartbeat, he sprinted forward, shifting into his massive wolf form mid-leap. With a snarl, he collided with the demon, managing to knock it off its trajectory towards the woman. I hesitated for only a moment then, with a growl of determination, jumped up from the ground and raced forward. My body shifted smoothly, instinctively, as I transformed into my own powerful wolf form.
The battle that ensued was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. The demon was strong, fast, and relentless, but so were we. Damon and I moved in tandem, our years of friendship and trust manifesting in a seamless dance of snarls, claws, and teeth. His agile movements complimented my brute strength, and for a moment, it felt like we were unstoppable.
