My heart thudded in my chest, a mixture of hope and trepidation coursing through my veins.

"So with this new information... does it mean you can break the curse?" I asked, barely daring to breathe as I awaited her answer. Audrey's eyes met mine, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of hope within their depths. But then her gaze dropped, and her face fell.

"That's the bad news part," she sighed, her voice heavy with resignation. "What I saw was, like I said, one of the most beautiful and complex spells I have ever seen. The spell hasn't just been placed on your wolf but on several versions of your wolf. It has been spread across multiple parallel universes, so that removing the part of the spell on you could either trigger an instant activation, break the whole spell or do nothing at all."

"Like a bomb?" Damon interjected, his usually jovial tone laced with concern.

"Exactly," Audrey nodded, her expression grave.

“Alright, so we know the curse was created by a powerful sorcerer, your father, right?” I asked and Audrey nodded.

“Yes, that was the first thing I was able to decipher from it,” she said looking between us both, “And that is a big thing because sometimes knowing who the caster was can help you break the curse.” A look crossed over her face that I didn’t like.

“What is it?” I asked.

“There is more than one signature, like someone else was involved,” she said. “That was the second thing that I got from what I saw.” I nodded, remembering what my father had told me about the curse.

"My father sought help from a local witch before I was born," I explained. "She told him the curse was designed to strike when I was born, and she and others altered it to give us more time to find a way to break it. I don't know exactly what she did but maybe that is what you are seeing?"

"I think so," Audrey said, her voice tinged with resolve. "I’m not completely sure but I think the witches who altered the curse added a failsafe, which means there might be a way to break it, after all."

"Really?" I asked, my heart leaping at the possibility. "How?"

"Can we find the witch?" Damon inquired, his voice filled with urgency. "Maybe she knows something that can help us break this curse."

"Maybe," Audrey mused, tapping her fingers thoughtfully against the table. "But first, I need to examine the curse further, try to understand the changes that were made and see if there are any clues hidden within its intricate patterns."

“There’s something else,” Damon said, looking at Audrey and she grimaced.

“From what I can tell, for the spell to break naturally, it would take a specific combination of events at the exact right time. Like even only finding this out now could unlock a part of the combination and needing to be in wolf form when you complete the mating and marking process.”

“So we just need to know the combination and carry out the tasks? Like in a video game?” Damon asked, and I grinned. We both were gaming geeks, so that sounded fun. Audrey smiled, but it was a sad one, and she rubbed her temples like she was getting a headache.

“What is it?” I asked. I could see that there was more to this. She looked at me with what looked like sympathy.

“The coding, the combination lock is so precise and has so many moving parts that I get the feeling that it was designed to never be broken,” she looked me in the eye “Everything I see tells me that your wolf is meant to die.” Then she looked at Damon with tears in her eyes. “And that of every wolf connected to you.”

Audrey's revelation weighed heavily upon us. My heart clenched with the knowledge of what was at stake: not only my own life, but that of every wolf connected to me. The enormity of it all felt suffocating, and I struggled to find the words to express the turmoil within me. Later that night I tossed and turned in the guest room, my thoughts a whirlwind of despair and frustration. Sleep seemed impossible with the weight of our dire situation pressing down on me. My wolf and I were trapped between life and death, the knowledge that our loved ones' fates were tied to ours only adding to the torment. The house was silent, but I could feel the tension seeping through its walls as if it were a living entity. I knew I wasn't the only one struggling with the revelations of the evening.

Unable to bear the suffocating stillness any longer, I pushed myself out of bed and padded quietly to the hallway. The soft glow of moonlight filtered through the windows, casting eerie shadows onto the floor. My ears perked up as I heard muffled voices coming from Audrey's room, where she and Damon had retreated earlier. Leaning closer, I tried to discern what they were saying. Their voices were low, heavy with emotion, and I hesitated, not wanting to intrude on their private moment. A part of me understood that what transpired between them was none of my business, but I couldn't help the curiosity that gnawed at me, the need to know whether Audrey had discovered anything new in her research.

"Everything feels so... hopeless," Damon murmured, his voice cracking.

"Hey," Audrey whispered soothingly, "we can't lose faith now. There has to be a way to break this curse. We just haven't found it yet."

"But what if we don't?" Damon's voice trembled, betraying his fear. "What if we fail, and everyone suffers because of it?" My heart clenched at the raw vulnerability in his words. It was rare to hear such uncertainty from Damon, who always appeared so steadfast and unshakable.

“We will do whatever it takes,” Audrey replied determinedly, her tone soft yet resolute. Silence settled in their room as I leaned against the wall, my own emotions a tangled mess. The unwavering love and loyalty that bound us together were both a source of strength and a painful reminder of what was at stake. I knew we would face any challenge head-on, but the uncertainty gnawed at me like a relentless beast.

With a deep breath, I stepped away from Audrey's door, my resolve steeling itself in the darkness. This wasn't the time to falter or doubt. We needed to stand united, to trust in each other and ourselves to find a way, even if it meant defying fate itself.

The following morning, I dragged myself out of bed, my body still aching from the ritual and the weight of our dire situation. As I made my way to the dining table, I caught sight of Audrey hunched over a book, her fingers flying across the pages like a whirlwind. The air around her practically crackled with energy, and I could feel the intensity of her frustration even from where I stood.

"Morning," Damon grunted as he joined me at the table, looking just as worn as I felt. We exchanged a knowing glance before turning our attention back to Audrey.

"Damn it all," she muttered under her breath, scribbling something down with fervour. Her hand moved in a swift motion, tracing an intricate pattern in the air that seemed to shimmer for a moment before disappearing. I couldn't help but be captivated by the raw power radiating from her.

"Can't... figure... this... out!" Audrey growled through gritted teeth as she hurled the book at one of the large windows. To my surprise, the tome burst into flames midair, disintegrating into a heap of ashes before it could shatter the glass. She screamed in frustration, her eyes blazing like the fire she had just created.
