"Us?" I scoffed, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "You don't understand. Joining your pack would mean becoming an Omega, submitting to a hierarchy I never chose."
"Is it really about rank?" he questioned, his brow furrowing with concern. "Or is it about fear? Fear of letting go, fear of trusting someone again?" His words stung, but I refused to let him see how deeply they cut. Instead, I summoned my most defiant glare, meeting his gaze head-on.
"You think this is about fear?" I spat, bitterness coating my tongue. "My Gamma rank is all I have left from my parents, Damon. My past, my legacy... everything I am." A flicker of surprise flashed across his face before he schooled his expression once more.
"Your parents? Why didn't you tell me before?"
"Would it have changed anything?" I asked, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Erica, I..."
"Did you know?" I interrupted, my voice trembling with barely restrained anger. "Did you know I was a member of the Moon Key Pack?" The shock in his eyes was answer enough.
"I had no idea," he confessed, his voice barely audible. "Everyone thought you were all dead."
"Yet here I am," I replied bitterly, my throat tight with unshed tears. "A living ghost, clinging to the tattered remains of a life long gone." His hand reached out to cup my cheek, and for a moment, I allowed myself to lean into his touch, seeking solace in his warmth. But as the weight of the fear that lived inside me threatened to overwhelm me, I pulled away, refusing to let him see just how much I longed to surrender.
"Living in constant fear, Damon. That's been our reality," I said quietly, wrapping my arms around myself. "Hiding, running, never letting our guards down. It's like being hunted, even when we're not." His brow furrowed as he stepped closer to me, his dark eyes filled with concern and frustration.
"You don't have to live like that, Erica. Join our pack, let us protect you. We're stronger together."
"Stronger?" I scoffed, fighting back the urge to laugh bitterly. "You think being part of a pack will make me strong? It'll just make me dependent on you, on everyone else. That's not strength."
"Erica, it's not about dependence," he argued, his voice firm yet gentle. "It's about having a family who has your back, who supports you and helps you grow. Isn't that what you want?"
My heart clenched at his words, and for a moment, I allowed myself to imagine a life where I didn't have to hide or constantly watch over my shoulder. But that dream was nothing more than an illusion, something I couldn't afford to indulge in.
"Of course I want that," I admitted, staring into his eyes. "But I can't just abandon my family. They're all I have left. And they need me now more than ever."
"Your family can join too," he offered quickly, desperation creeping into his voice. I let out another bitter laugh.
“Really?” I asked. “You think you can convince your almighty Alpha to take in a bunch of rogues?” Damon looked conflicted for a moment but then fierce determination set in his eye.
“Yes,” he nodded. “If that’s what it takes, then I will make it happen.” My heart hurt at his persistence, but I still shook my head.
“And our humans?” I asked, already knowing the answer. It was a strict pack law that humans were not allowed in packs unless they had some way to supernaturally protect themselves. Damon tried to hide the shock on his face but failed.
“Humans?” he asked.
“Yep,” I nodded. “Four of them.” I knew that there was no way, unless he was the Alpha himself, that he would be able to get four humans to be allowed in the pack.
"Maybe we could work something out. We could protect all of you. You wouldn’t have to run anymore."
"Except we do, Damon," I said softly, rubbing my forehead as I tried to ward off the headache that threatened to consume me. "We think we've been discovered. We have to leave, find a new place to lie low. We would only be putting your pack in danger as well."
"Damn it, Erica!" he snapped, his anger finally boiling over. "Why are you so stubborn? Can't you see I'm trying to help you?"
"Help me?" I raised an eyebrow, my sarcasm returning full force. "Or help yourself by keeping me close?" His jaw clenched, and for a moment, I thought he'd argue further. But instead, he took a deep breath, his supernatural ability to calm himself evident in the way his anger dissipated as quickly as it had come.
"Fine," he said quietly, his voice strained. "If that's what you want, I won't try to stop you."
"Thank you," I whispered, feeling tears prick at the corners of my eyes. I knew how much it cost him to let me go, but I couldn't give up my family – not even for him.I sat back down suddenly feeling emotionally drained.
The silence between us was heavy, like a suffocating fog that crept its way into my heart. I clenched my fists, feeling the cool leather of the sofa beneath me, trying to ground myself in the moment. Finally, I felt Damon's eyes on me and seconds later he broke the silence.
“When do you leave?” he asked quietly.
“Next week, I think,” I said.
