"What?" She nodded, determination etched across her features.
"I know you don't want to be in the pack house, Erica. I'll take you somewhere in the pack territory where no one will look."
As Kaitlyn began packing a few essentials into a bag, my chest tightened with a mix of gratitude and fear. I knew how much trust she was placing in me by choosing to help me escape, and with that trust came the weight of responsibility and expectation.
"Are you sure about this?" I asked hesitantly, my voice trembling.
"Positive," she replied without a moment's hesitation, slinging the bag over her shoulder. "Now come on, let's get out of here before anyone notices we're gone."
We moved stealthily through the quiet corridors, my heart pounding in my ears with every step. Kaitlyn's confidence seemed unwavering, but I couldn't shake the feeling that we were walking on a tightrope, one misstep away from falling into an abyss of consequences. As we slipped out a side door and into the cool night air, I couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. I was leaving behind the safety and support of the pack house, but at the same time, I was escaping the judgement and potential rejection that loomed over me like a shadow.
"Are you okay?" Kaitlyn asked softly as we made our way deeper into the pack territory, her voice barely more than a whisper.
"Am I making a mistake?" I questioned, my thoughts spinning with uncertainty. The idea of being alone in the world again terrified me, yet the thought of facing the pack, and Liam, filled me with dread.
"Only you can answer that," Kaitlyn said gently. "But remember, you're not alone. You've got friends who care about you, and no matter what happens, we'll be there for you."
The cold wind whipped at my face as Kaitlyn and I crossed the narrow bridge that connected the pack house to the main part of the territory. The moon hung low in the sky, casting shadows on the ground that seemed to dance with every gust of wind.
"Where are we going?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady despite the uneasy feeling that settled in the pit of my stomach.
"To my fated mate's place," Kaitlyn replied, her eyes fixed on the path ahead. "No one knows about them yet, so they won't know to look for us there."
"Are you sure your mate isn't a spy?" I couldn't help but ask.
"Absolutely," Kaitlyn assured me, her voice firm and confident. "My mate is safe. You'll see."
We continued walking through the deserted streets of the pack town; the silence amplifying my anxiety. With the pack on lockdown, there were no people milling about or laughter filling the air. Instead, the atmosphere was heavy with tension, leaving the place feeling cold and unwelcoming. I glanced at Kaitlyn, who walked beside me with determination etched on her face. She had risked so much to help me escape, and I wondered if I was worth the trouble. Was I simply dragging her down with me, forcing her to make sacrifices she shouldn't have to make?
"Kaitlyn," I began hesitantly. "Thank you. For everything." She turned to me, offering a small, reassuring smile. "You don't need to thank me, Erica. You're my friend, and I'm here for you, no matter what." Her words stirred something deep within me, easing some of the pressure on my chest. Despite my fears and uncertainties, I knew that I wasn't alone. Kaitlyn had shown me that there were people who cared, even if I couldn't see it myself.
"Let's keep going," she urged, taking my hand and pulling me forward. "We're almost there."
We finally arrived at a house nestled on the edge of the forest. The modern design and warm lighting emanating from within provided a stark contrast to the surrounding darkness. I admired the architecture, feeling a sense of hope that this place could offer me sanctuary, if only for a brief moment.
The front door opened, revealing Frankie standing in the doorway with her signature mischievous grin plastered across her face. My eyes widened in shock as Kaitlyn let go of my hand and sprinted towards her, enveloping her in a passionate embrace before sharing a deep, loving kiss.
"Frankie...is your fated mate?" I stammered, struggling to grasp the revelation.
"Surprise," Kaitlyn replied, still intertwined with Frankie, their connection undeniable. I couldn't help but feel a pang of envy, longing for the same kind of love they shared.
"Come on in," Frankie beckoned, guiding us into the warm, inviting interior of her home. The door clicked shut behind us, locking the cold world outside.
"Never a dull moment around you, eh?" Frankie teased, smirking at me. Despite the heaviness weighing on my chest, her playful demeanour managed to coax a small smile onto my lips.
"I try my best," I responded, trying to keep things light even though my thoughts were racing. Here was a secret relationship hidden away from the pack, defying societal norms. It made me question everything I thought I knew about the world I had been thrust into.
My gaze wandered over the cosy living room, taking in the comfortable furniture and personal touches, paired with bold colours and exciting looking artwork.
"Whose place is this?" I asked, my curiosity piqued by the unique blend of styles.
"It's my mom's," Frankie replied, her tattoos catching the light as she gestured around the room. "She's away on pack business right now. They called everyone to go to their family homes or stay in their own housing a few hours ago. Kaitlyn filled me in about the spies earlier through mind link." Frankie cast a sidelong glance at Kaitlyn. "It's definitely a tense situation."
My gaze shifted between the two of them, noting the way they gravitated toward each other even when they weren't touching. Their connection was palpable, and I felt a pang of envy deep within my chest.
"How long have you two known you were fated mates?" I asked, unable to suppress my curiosity any longer. Kaitlyn exchanged a look with Frankie before answering, her voice soft yet steady.
"We found out when I turned eighteen, about eight months ago."
