She forced her eyes open, needing to see him. To understand what was going on.
His dark hair was the first thing to enter her vision. His head was down, so she couldn’t see his eyes, but the tension in his shoulders was obvious.
“What happened?”
His head shot up, eyes flaring. “Cricket! You’re awake.”
“Yeah.” She turned to take in the room. “I’m in the hospital.”
“Do you remember anything?”
She frowned. “We got home from Aunt Pam’s. I went into the bedroom. And…” She gasped, her eyes flashing back to Colt. “Gordon!”
The frustration on his face shifted to something darker. Something that made him look irrefutably dangerous. “He grabbed you. Put a knife to your throat.”
“I shot him in the foot.”
Just the smallest hint of a smile twitched at his lips. “Yeah, you did good.”
“What happened next?”
“I disabled him. He’s here, in the hospital. You’re safe.”
Gordon was in the hospital. They had him. “So he won’t be able to come after us again?”
“After shooting a deputy and Ben, attacking Mom, and then everything that happened tonight, he won’t be out for a while.”
Relief hit her so hard that tears filled her eyes. “Thank God.”
Colt stroked the back of her hand. “I’m sorry.”
“Why are you sorry?”
“It’s because of me that he attacked you. Because you’re my wife.”
“No. It’s because ofhimthat he attacked me. You didn’t ask for any of this.”
“But if you weren’t married to me—”
“I am. And there is nowhere else in the world I’d rather be than by your side.”
For a second, his gaze bore into hers, and even though she tried, she couldn’t figure out what he was thinking. Then he lifted her hand and kissed the back of it. “I love you.”
“It can’t be as much as I love you.”
He chuckled, like it was a joke.
A knock sounded at the door, and a woman wearing a white lab coat, who had wisps of gray in her hair, stepped into the room.
She smiled warmly. “Hi. Is this an okay time?”
“Of course,” Indie nodded.
The woman stopped at the end of the bed. “I’m Doctor Frankie. I’ve already met your husband, but it’s nice to officially meet you, Mrs. Reed.”
“You too.”
The doctor pushed her glasses up her nose. “Do you remember how you got here?”
