God, Sky loved watching those two together. If there were ever two people who were destined to date, it was them.

“I’m just going to grab a quick shower,” Becket said, pressing a kiss to her head as he passed her.

This time,hercheeks heated.

Over the next twenty minutes, Clara and Holden helped her set the table. Every time Holden spoke to the woman, or heck, even brushed past her, she seemed to get a little more shy.

When everything was ready, Sky glanced down the hall. “I’ll go check on Becket.”

She stepped into his bedroom—well, hers too, with how much time she spent here—just as Becket was pulling a shirt from his drawer.

Man, oh, man, he looked good in just jeans. Would she ever get to the point where looking away from him didn’t feel like the hardest thing ever?

Probably not.

“Keep looking at me like that, and we won’t make it back out there,” Becket said, voice low and husky as he pulled on his shirt. Then he stepped close and curled his arms around her.

“Like what?” she asked innocently.

“Like you want to resume what we started in the kitchen.”

Her lower belly rippled. “I’m just looking at the man I love.”

A long exhale escaped his chest. “I’ll never tire of hearing you say those words.”

She rose to her toes, her mouth so close to his that she could feel his breath. Then she whispered, “I love you, Becket Hayes.”

“I love you too, Sky Williams.” Then he kissed her, and it made every moment leading up to this, every fight and lick of danger, worth it.

CHAPTER35

Holden Forbes caught the small side glance from Clara.

She did that a lot. Little glances she thought he didn’t notice. Looks from beneath her lashes.

They’d been alone in the kitchen for about thirty seconds, and she hadn’t said a word, just put her head down as she made coffee.

He should be used to it. He’d been best friends with Jesse for close to eight years and had known Clara for seven of them. She’d been like this since the day they’d met…but only with him. Around everyone else, she was fun and fearless. A completely different person.

And yeah, he wasn’t stupid. He knew she had feelings for him. The idea of loving his best friend’s little sister shouldn’t scare him as much as it did. But he’d felt the weight of losing a loved one before, and he was definitely scared as hell to feelthatagain.

He cleared his throat. “How’ve you been, Clara?”

Her brows shot up. “Me? I’ve, um, been…yeah, I’ve been good. Busy stabbing people with my needles and making their lives better. I’ve been gardening a lot. Getting sunlight on my skin wherever possible. I started running—”

“Running?”

She frowned, looking him straight in the eye for the first time. “Yeah. Why do you say it like that?”

“How far do you run?”

“I don’t know. The streets around my house. Why?”

“You’re in remission from cancer and have chronic fatigue.”

Her back straightened, pink tinging her cheeks, but he was pretty sure this time it was anger. “I know that.”

“Are you allowed to run?”
