Eastern almost wished he’d been there to see that. No doubt whichever poor soul had given him the news had received an earful. “I bet he wasn’t too happy.”
“That he was not. Made quite the spectacle of himself, threw a few insults around. Well, things I suspect were insults. Didn’t really understand what he was saying.”
He chuckled and headed toward his office. “Thanks for the update.”
“There was also a break-in at Sugar and Spice.”
His muscles locked and he spun. “What?”
“Yeah, that poor granddaughter who just returned to Misty Peak actually walked in on the perp.”
Thefuck? “Did she get hurt?”
“I think she’s at the hospital now. I’m not sure which officers went to the scene—”
“I’m going to her.”
Daisy’s brows shot up, but he barely paid her any attention as he stormed out of the station and raced to his car.
Someone broke into the bakery? Who? Why? And what exactly had happened when she’d walked in on them? Why was she at the fuckinghospital?
He made it to the hospital in half the time it should have taken. He was told she was in room eight, and when he walked in, he saw two of his deputies closing notepads. They both turned, Charles lifting a brow. “Boss. What are you—”
“I’m here to check on Sadie.”
He frowned. “But we—”
“Go back to the station. Write up the report.”
They each frowned but nodded before stepping out. That’s when he took in Sadie and the gauze on her hands.
He bit back a curse as he stepped in front of her, not even trying to stop himself as he cupped her cheek. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah. The person who broke in hit me with a cake stand when I turned my back.” She laughed, but there wasn’t much humor behind it. “A cake stand as a weapon, can you believe it? Your officers found it at the scene.”
He couldn’t believe any of this. “But you’re okay?”
“No concussion. I have a small bandage on the back of my head from a cut. I also fell on some glass.” She lifted her bandaged hands to prove it.
“Male or female?”
Disappointment filled her eyes. “I don’t know. I don’t knowanything. They came at me after I turned to leave, and by the time I got up, they were gone.”
He trailed his fingers gently through her hair, his eyes never leaving her black gaze. “You never answered my question. Are you okay?”
“Honestly, I don’t know. I’m shocked that my grandmother’s store was broken into. Sad that it was trashed, and we’ll have to close for a while to fix everything. And I’m confused. So confused. Why would someone do this? They obviously stole some money from the register, but we don’t keep much in there because most people pay with card. If it was a money thing, wouldn’t it make more sense to break into the liquor store next door?”
Eastern frowned, suddenly remembering the altercation between Sadie and Morris Anderson. “Have you and Morris been getting along?”
Her brows shot up. “Me and Mr. Anderson? We don’t talk. We haven’t talked since you saw us in the alley.”
“What about Scott?”
She shook her head. “No. He wouldn’t do this. Why would he bother?”
“Maybe he wants you scared and running back to him? Or maybe he’s angry you left him and wants to get back at you.”
Her eyes flared before she shook her head. “I still don’t think he would do this. IknowScott. Well, at least IthinkI do.”
