“It’s good to be home.”
Eastern crossed the yard and stepped into the house through the back door, finding Sadie looking through the back window. She turned and smiled at him. “Hey.”
He crossed the small space between them and gently slipped his arms around her waist before kissing her temple. “How are your ribs?”
“They’re fine. I took my pain medication, and I barely feel a thing.”
“Good. What are you doing in here?”
“I’m not allowed to tell you.”
He looked at the milk heating on the stove and the cocoa and sugar beside it. “You’re making hot cocoa for Avery.”
“What are you, a detective?”
“No, just the sheriff of this small town.” He nuzzled her neck. “You’re too good to her.”
“No such thing.”
She sighed and looked out the window again. “We’re really lucky, aren’t we? To have all these people who care about us.”
“Yeah, honey. We are. But I’m the luckiest because I have you and Avery.”
She turned in his arms and looked up, emotion thick in her dark eyes. “Everything just kind of feels perfect tonight.”
He cupped her cheek. “Good. You deserve perfect.”
“I love you, Eastern Walker.”
He lowered his head and hovered his mouth over hers. “I love you so much, Iachefor you.” Then he kissed her.
CHAPTER 33
“So basically, you’ll be ensuring people are staying safe, taking any tourists who’d like a guide onto the skywalk, and for the real daredevils, setting up and running rappelling sessions.”
Jace nodded as he wrapped his fingers around the railing of the skywalk. It was pretty fucking magnificent up here and pretty cool that rappelling was going to be offered. The rappelling would take place in the center of the skywalk, where a big tree connected to the walk. “I can’t wait. You’ve done a good job of setting this up.”
Tilly lifted a shoulder. “Linda did the groundwork. I just came in at the end to grab all the glory.”
Kayden scoffed. “I don’t think so. You’ve done a lot to make sure this was finished when it should be.” He kissed her temple.
Jace grinned. “Shit, you guys are too cute.”
He moved back toward the end of the skywalk. In the coming week, he’d get trained on the rappelling side of things, but he doubted they’d get a whole lot of interest in that. What people really wanted was to see these mountains from high up. And yeah, he was looking forward to spending his days up here too.
“Don’t think I’ve ever been called cute before, but I’ll take it,” Kayden said.
Jace threw a glance over his shoulder. “Only when you’re with her. On your own, you’re like a poor man’s Henry Cavill.”
His brother shoved his shoulder, and he bit back the grin.
They made their way back to the visitors center, which was only a few minutes’ walk. On the way, Tilly and Kayden spoke about the most recent changes to the center and the influx of tourists over the last few months.
He liked Tilly. And he could see why his brother liked her. She was friendly and had a good sense of humor. Plus, she was smart. You could see the intelligence in her eyes. When he’d first heard the two were dating, he’d been surprised, given who her father was and what he’d done totheirfather. Kayden had always taken that the hardest. But they’d obviously worked through their differences.
When they reached the visitors center, they walked through the foyer into her office.
Tilly sat at her desk. “I’ll just print the job offer for you to read through and sign.”
