Kayden raked his fingers through his hair. “Yeah, they were from me. The nurses told me you were asking for puzzles.”
Jake laughed. “I like to keep busy. And I loved the snacks and drinks. Hospital food sucks.”
“I’ll bring you lunch today. What do you want?”
“No, you don’t have to do that.”
“I want to. And trust me, you’ll be helping me. I’ve been going batshit crazy with no work.” He wasn’t joking. He was also a man who liked to keep busy, exactly why he was here at Cody’s place, searching for things to do.
“Well, if you’re offering, I’d love a burger.”
“Done. I’ll see you soon.”
When he hung up, Cody raised his brows. “You’re taking him lunch?”
“I am.”
“Who?” Harper asked, as she and Tilly stepped out into the yard.
“Jake.”
Tilly’s eyes widened. “Do you mind if I join? I visited yesterday but would like to see him again.”
It shouldn’t bother him, but fuck, he didn’t like that Tilly wanted to visit Jake every day. That probably made him an asshole, what with Jake being shot and all.
“Sure.”
Once the fence was fixed and in place, he and Tilly said goodbye to Cody and Harper and took separate cars to the hospital. Even though Kayden stopped to grab the burger, they arrived at the hospital at the same time, her car pulling up next to his truck.
Kayden raised a brow at the milkshakes in her hands as she climbed out.
“What?” she asked defensively. “He told me he likes Sugar and Spice milkshakes, so I got him one.” She reached into the car and pulled out a coffee cup. “I also got you a coffee.”
One side of his mouth lifted. “Really?”
“Mm-hmm.”
“That’s funny. Because I got you a burger.”
A grin curved her lips. “You did? I mean, I wanted to ask but held off because this isn’t about me.”
“No need to ask.”
The smile widened, and it was so damn radiant that it took him too long to get his eyes off her. When they finally made it into Jake’s hospital room, that smile appeared again, but this time for the other man.
“Hey. How are you doing?”
“Better now,” Jake replied with a grin. “I didn’t know you were coming.”
“I was with Kayden when he said he was coming here.”
Jake’s gaze shifted between them, like he was trying to work something out.
Tilly lifted the drink. “I brought you a milkshake.”
“It’s like you’re an angel.” He slipped the drink from her fingers and put the straw to his mouth.
Tilly lowered into the seat beside the bed. “You haven’t regained any memories from the day you were shot?”
