“Depends. What did you bring?”

“Burgers, sweet potato fries, and cupcakes from Sugar and Spice.”

Did he somehow know those were her favorites? Even that she always chose sweet potato fries over normal fries?

“I even got one of each sauce for the fries,” he added.

“The selection of sauces kind of makes it impossible to say no.” She stepped up to the door and unlocked it.

“So you’re not sending me away?” he asked.

“Well, I don’t like my chances of wrestling the takeout bags from your hand, so I guess inviting you in is my only choice.”

One side of his mouth lifted. “Guess it is.”

He stepped inside, and just like the last time, it felt like he took up all the space in her small hallway.

When he entered the living room, his gaze moved to the windows. “They look good.”

“They do, don’t they?” But then, anything would look better than boarded-over windows. “They installed them while I was at work today. Thank you for organizing it.”

“It was nothing.”

But it wasn’t, and they both knew it.

When his gaze held hers a beat too long, she cleared her throat and closed the door before heading to the kitchen, where she opened the fridge. “Drink? There’s soda, juice, water…”

When he didn’t respond, she closed the door—only to gasp at how close he was. He was there…likerightthere, behind where the door had been. How had he moved without making a sound?

“Kayden—”

“I’m sorry I didn’t catch you before I left today. When I was finally finished with the officers on the scene, you were gone.”

“After they questioned me, I visited Jake.”

“You went to see him at the hospital?”

“Yeah, a nurse took pity on me and gave me his room number.”

“How was he?”

She lifted a shoulder. “I don’t know. He didn’t wake up. But he was breathing.” Which was good. Today could have gone a lot differently.

There was a short pause, and Tilly could almost see Kayden’s mind working. She squirmed before finally asking, “What is it?”

“Are you two…”

Her brows shot up. “Dating? No. We’re just friends.”

He nodded slowly. “Good.”

Good? Why was it good? She wanted to ask, but a part of her was scared of the answer. Or maybe she was just scared that she’d like it.

CHAPTER 11

Tilly snuck a peak at Kayden from beneath her lashes. They sat on the couch in front of the TV, but if someone asked her what they were watching, she’d have no idea. A movie with a wooden cabin and a woman who looked worried? Yeah, didn’t really say a lot.

She dunked another sweet potato fry into the sweet and sour sauce. She’d gotten about two thirds of the way through her burger before moving on to these fries. Not that she was concentrating on the food any more than she was the movie.
