“You’re not.”
“But how do you know that?”
“Because you want it…you want her. We tend to self-sabotage when we don’t know what we want or we’re struggling to let something go. No, you didn’t have the best examples of love, but you know right from wrong, and from what I can see, you’re not perpetuating that shit. Not to mention, you’re the only one of us who has a daughter. If that ain’t a sign, I don’t know what is. Give her what you didn’t have.”
I nodded, because err’thing he said made sense. “You’re right.”
“I know I am. Now onto this contractor. What’s up? What are you into? I might want in if it’s legit.”
That earned a chuckle from me.
“How do you know it’s legit?” I questioned, watching Beyah pulling into the driveway on the side of me.
“That’s why I’m asking, fool.”
“Aight. You up to take a ride?”
He nodded. “I need to have something on me or…”
I laughed hard as hell. “Damn, I’m not that damn dangerous.”
“Yeah, aight.”
G ended up getting out of the car to help Beyah pull as far off the driveway as she could. Then they both got in my truck and we headed toward the house.
“So where are we headed?” Beyah asked about five minutes into the ride.
“To see why Reminisce has a contractor’s contact.” I cut my eyes in my brother’s direction as I exited the highway. Usually, it was a twenty-minute ride, but today it was quicker.
“Oh. Why, Reminisce?”
“I bought some shit. Well, a couple shits, but one is special.”
“What’s special about it?” G asked.
About ten minutes later we pulled into the driveway. The scaffolding to the exterior bricks were gone, letting me know they were done tuckpointing. We got out of the truck, and for a moment, just stood there.
“This is beautiful. Full brick?” Beyah asked, stepping forward.
“Yeah. I just had it tuckpointed and any of the cracked ones replaced.”
She nodded.
“So you bought a house?” G asked, standing beside me.
I threw my head forward, then led the way to the front door. “Yeah. Figured I’d get into something else since what I’m used to don’t quite fit me anymore.” When I had the door opened, I allowed them to enter first, then I followed. Jason had done his shit, from the freshly painted walls to the stone fireplace. From what I understood, they were now working on the stairs.
“This area is great. This is one of the areas we’re looking to buy in.” She looked at G.
He nodded. “You must have bought it a while back.”
“Hell yeah. It sat for a while.”
“Good schools, stores close. On the cusp of the city and suburbs. Golden. Do you intend to move in here?”
“At first, I didn’t. Place just sat. Now that’s the plan.”
“Damn bro, you really are staying in one spot, huh?”
