Me:Next time I’m going to order lobster and French champagne
Stalker:I can afford it
Me:Fine. Free-range chicken and grass-fed beef
Stalker:Okay
Me:Why?
Stalker:Why not?
Me:You talk in riddles
Stalker:Don’t pretend you don’t know what this is
Me:Don’t come back to my house
Stalker:Don’t play a game you can’t win
“Ugh!” I toss the phone on the couch. Then I make sure my door is locked. I must have left it unlocked last night. I take it a step further and put the chain on the door, along with a chair underneath the doorknob.
I’m floating away and let out a moan. I bounce, and I spread my arms wide, but they hit against something, and I’m jolted. My eyes fly open. I stare into the dark gaze of the man who has been driving me crazy for weeks.
“I put the chain in the door,” I whisper in a sleep-heavy voice. I rub my eyes and I pinch my arm to makesure I’m not dreaming.
He puts me on the bed and covers me.
“I cut it,” he says. His words come out much too casual for the occasion. He walks out of the room, and my eyes are too heavy to ask more questions. I wait to hear the door open and close, but it never happens.
I hear movement, but sleep tries to overtake me. Moments later, he returns. He sits at the end of the bed, and it dips. I don’t know what he’s doing, and I’m too tired to ask, but he soon slides into the bed behind me and wraps his arm around my waist.
It’s been months since I shared a bed with a man, and even longer since one held me in his arms.
“Mmhmm,” I moan and move closer to the warm, hard body. The arm tightens around me, and I sigh in contentment.
Chapter 20
Rip
I shouldn’t have done it. I fought with myself, but like a fool, I took off my shoes and slid in behind her. For an old, ugly bed, it was comfortable, and I soon fell asleep despite her snoring.
Never has a woman felt or smelled so good. I found her asleep on her couch, wearing an ugly T-shirt. Her legs were bare, and she weighed next to nothing when I picked her up.
I told myself I would only stay for half an hour to ensure she was okay, even though she was fine when I arrived. My eyes got heavy, and I fell into one of the most peaceful sleeps ever, and I did something I’ve never done before. I let go.
“Oh, hell no,” I think I hear someone say. It’s a sweet voice, and I long to hear it again. Then I feel a small hand on my shoulder. “Will you move, you Paul Bunyan clone?” I’m pushed again, but the person is as strong as an ant.
I feel a whack on my forehead, and my eyes fly open and lock into the brown ones that have been torturing me since I first saw them. Her eyes widen, and she shoves at my chest.
It takes me a few seconds to remember where I am.
“Oh, shit,” I mutter.
My arm is still wrapped tightly around her. She tries to lift it, but I don’t move. I hear a loud pounding on the door.
“That’s my mother, you freak. Let me go before she breaks the door down.”
I blink several times while her words sink in. I was supposed to leave after a few minutes, but I fell into a deep sleep.
