“If you compare what we have to what you had with dipshit, I’m going to lose my mind.”

“I wasn’t going to do that, but—”

“But nothing.”

“Let’s talk about that later. Guess what?” I ask, ready to change the subject. “I made a reservation for us at a restaurant in Manhattan. My treat.”

I hold my breath and wait for it.

“Do I look like a pussy to you?”

And I giggle at the predictable question.

“We’ll go wherever you want, but you’re not spending a dime. It’s enough that you buy groceries sometimes.”

I roll my eyes at him. “You’re going to change your mind when I decorate your place for Halloween and Christmas.”

“I’ll never change my mind about my forever. And it’s our place.”

“You will.”

“Never, even though you leave your wet towels on my side of the bed.”

“I warned you in the beginning, and you wanted me anyway.”

“What was I thinking? Oh, well. Too late now, Thorny. I have to go. I can’t call again until I’m on my way home.Ourhome,” he stresses.

“We can revisit this in three months, and if you—”

“Woman,” he huffs. “Enough with that bullshit. I have you right where I want you.”

“And where is that?”

“By my side.”

I giggle while I turn down the two-lane road that leads me directly to his house. As usual, the street is empty. While we talk about our plans for the weekend, I press on the brakes while I take the corner and go up the hill.

I see a car several feet away as it descends the hill. As the vehicle gets closer, I notice it’s a big, black truck, and it’s speeding.

“Oh, babe, I want to go to Coney Island.”

“That sounds corny, but fine. Tell me you love me so I can get off the phone.”

The car coming toward me picks up its pace. I swerve a bit to the left to give the car more room.

“It’s not. Oh my god!” I yell when the truck swerves into my lane, hits my car, and everything goes black.

Chapter 58

Rip

“The fuck … you both have hickies?” Preacher asks.

I ignore him, and so does Dax.

“Maybe King’s neck is just red,” Dax says.

“And yours?” Preacher asks.
