TWENTY-FOUR

KASHTON

To my surprise, Sin and I are ushered into the same room at the station, hands still cuffed behind our backs. The door opens a minute later, and the familiar detective enters. I want to talk to him about Eve and the report that Adam showed me, but I bite my tongue. If Adam thinks I’m all she has, I believe him. She seems to be the one thing he cares about right now.

The detective plops down across from us. “Assault and battery? Where the fuck did you get a bat? You were on your bikes.” He doesn’t let us answer. “Reckless driving, slowing traffic on the highway in order to pop wheelies, lane splitting…guess it’s appropriate to assume that was the two of you the station was receiving calls about.”

We say nothing.

Haynes runs a hand down his face. “I’m only doing this because of Tyson,” he states.

Ty has this guy wrapped around his little finger, and it makes me wonder what Tyson has on him to get this kind of treatment.

He stands and walks behind me. Grabbing my shirt, he yanks me from the seat and undoes the cuffs. Then he removes Sin’s as well. “Get the fuck out of here,” he orders.

We walk outside, both laughing, but it dies when three people at the curb at the bottom of the steps turn to face us.

“Fuck,” Sin sighs softly under his breath. Then he plasters a big smile on his face. “Little?—”

“Don’t youlittle demonme right now, Easton,” his wife shouts.

“It was my fault,” I say, placing my hand on my heart with sympathy. “I’m so…”

“Shut the fuck up, Kashton,” she screams at me.

Tyson’s lips curl up, trying not to laugh, but Lake pops a hip out, obviously on her friend’s side.

Sin rubs his jaw. “How didyou…?” He trails off.

“Find out that you were arrested?” Elli finishes for him. “I was with Lake when Tyson called her and said he was headed to the station. What in the fuck were you thinking?” She puts her hands on her hips.

He doesn’t answer.

“Did you hit him with a helmet or a bat? You know what? It doesn’t matter what you used. What if you had killed him?”

“I’ll fight dirty.” Sin shrugs. “I’m about to be a father. Can’t pick your kids up with two broken hands.” He chuckles.

I didn’t think Elli’s face could get any redder than it already was, but she practically has smoke rolling from her ears.

“An assault with a deadly weapon constitutes aggravated assault, Easton. It’s a felony in the state of Pennsylvania. You could have gone to prison.”

His laughter grows.

“This is not an assignment,” she screams.

“Elli.” He softens his voice.

“Get in the fucking car,” she barks.

“I’ve got to get my bike out of impound,” he argues.

“Leave it. We’re selling that death trap.” Elli shakes her head. “You will not make me a widow because of your stupid, idiotic actions.” Her hard eyes meet mine before she spins around and waddles off to her SUV.

“Sorry, man,” I tell him.

Sin reaches out and pulls me in for a man handshake hug. “You’re fine. Pregnancy hormones. She gets pissed at me more times a day than I can count. In an hour, it’ll be something else.” He chuckles. “I’ll call you later.” With that, he walks slowly down the steps and nods to Tyson as he passes. He goes over to their SUV and opens the passenger door for her. Elli looks like she wants to argue and drive but just rolls her eyes and gets in. He shuts the door and makes his way to the driver’s seat.

As Sin pulls away, I walk down the steps, and Tyson speaks to me. “Get in. I’ll take you to Carnage.”
