He lifts his head, and his eyes search mine for a moment. I don’t know what I expect from him. I’m ready to give him my undying love, but I don’t. Because that would be clingy and weird, although it’s how I feel. It would also be immature, and it would only solidify the fact that I’m so much younger than him.

So I don’t say anything.

Instead, I smile, lean forward, and touch my mouth to his in a chaste kiss. “I need a shower.” It’s not what I want to say, but it’s what I say regardless, because I don’t want to act like an idiot.

Goose takes a step backward, tugging his jeans back up his legs and zipping them, but leaving the top button undone, which is probably the sexiest way a man could wear jeans, or maybe it’s just this man in jeans. I don’t know, but my mouth waters nonetheless.

GOOSE

I’m not sure how it happened, how this little girl went from being a sexy little thing to being the object of my fucking desire. The shower is running in her bathroom, and I swear to all that is holy, I could move a goddamn mountain for this girl.

Taking my phone out of my pocket, I find Bullet’s name and touch the call icon. I didn’t get the chance to tell him anything about my conversation with Cidney last night. She went to bed, and I lay on the couch like a fucking idiot. Nice couch, but not to sleep on.

My back is fucking feeling it today.

“You got something for me?” Bullet asks.

I chuckle because, boy, do I have something. I have a hell of a lot, and honest to fuck, I can’t believe it’s true. Bullet is going to absolutely lose his fucking shit over it all. Keeping my gaze onthe small hallway where Cidney’s bedroom door is tucked to the side, I tell Bullet about our conversation.

“It’s the Front Mob family.”

“What is?” he demands.

I can hear the slight shake to his voice, but I know it’s not because he’s scared. It’s because he doesn’t want it to be what I’m saying. He doesn’t want there to be more fucking drama, to be more war.

“That’s who Robin is working for. That’s who our men are protecting. And I have a feeling Jeffery Hagerty was looking for an in, and there she was, on an online dating app, blonde hair, blue eyes, and sexy as fuck.”

Bullet hisses but doesn’t speak immediately. “We didn’t ask questions,” he murmurs. “What do they want with us?” he asks. I know it’s rhetorical. He’s just speaking his thoughts out loud. I answer him anyway.

“With those bastards, you never truly know. I would venture to guess they wanted a way inside and then to take over. What I’m not sure about is whether they have any interest in anything they have any longer. At least I don’t think so.”

“They definitely aren’t going to be doing private security anytime soon. And protecting their own trucks, that’s also not something that will be happening. So what the fuck is the deal?” Bullet asks.

“Maybe it’s time for a meet,” I suggest.

“Just thinking out loud, maybe that fucker’s target was Ivy and not us?” he asks.

That’s a thought. But I’m not sure how those dots could be connected.

“We should probably see how the Front could be tied into Ivy. We’ll get working on that. You get your girl's place handled.”

“My girl?” I ask.

He snorts.

“You don’t think I’m that fucking stupid, yeah?”

“Yeah,” he says with a chuckle. “I really fucking think you are.”

He ends the call, and I shove my phone in my pocket just as Cidney makes her way out of the hall. She’s barefoot, wearing a pair of cutoff jean shorts and an oversized T-shirt. Her hair is wet and her face bare.

She’s fucking beautiful.

And Bullet is right. I am that fucking stupid.
