If it got me what I wanted…

“I swore I’d help you and then let you go.” Jett took a deep breath. “I thought it was the right thing to do with how messed up I was. But that hadn’t been my plan before I was captured. And after last night, I have hope again that maybe I can be enough for you and Griffin.”

Dropping his hand, I took both mine and placed them on the back of his neck. “There wasn’t a second you were not enough for me.” I placed a soft kiss on his lips. “You are the best person I know.”

He leaned his forehead against mine, and we stood like that for a second. I loved the connection as much as I loved him.

“You already know I have only been with Chaz and just that one time.” I was feeling a bit insecure but needed to get this out while he was being receptive to us talking. “For me, if we are together it will feel like the first time. And I know you have been gone and have probably had other lovers?—”

He pulled his head away from mine and let my arms fall to my sides as he looked me straight in the eyes. “Patience.” Whispering my name the way he did sent goosebumps skating across my skin. “There has never been anyone.”

I must have heard him wrong.

“W-what?” I stuttered, stunned at what his words were implying. My heart raced as I waited for him to explain.

We may have been best friends who shared everything, but asking if there had been any women in the last couple of years was not something I did because I wasn’t sure I could handle the answer. But now it was out there, and his answer shocked me to my core.

Jett grabbed my cheeks like I had his moments before. “Never. It may sound lame at my age, but I’ve never had sex with anyone.” His thumbs brushed up and down my skin. “Nobody has ever been on my radar but you. And I have never wanted anyone but you.”

He was serious. I could see it in his stare, his beautiful blue eyes imploring me to believe him. I did. Jett would not lie to me about something like this.

“Buthowis that even possible?”

He chuckled. “Do you need me to explain how sex works even when I’m not having it?”

I rolled my eyes, swatting his side.

“Don’t get me wrong. When I said I wanted you, I was dead serious.” He moved his hands to my hips. “You’re doing a number on my cock half-dressed like you are.”

His dirty words sent a thrill through me, and I huffed out a breath that we had to wait. I raised my brows. “We are both almost undressed.”

Another groan slipped from him. “As I said, you’re killing me, sweetheart.” He pulled me up next to his body and into a hug. “A date, then maybe we can see where it takes us,” he whispered in my ear.

“I know where it will lead,” I told him, causing him to laugh again.

The way his chest rumbled with laughter sent peace to my soul. I’d been worried that I wouldn’t hear that sound anymore. We’d always had so many amazing times together that had been filled with fun and laughter. My best friend had been a hoot. At least with me.

I was looking forward to experiencing that with my husband.

“Maybe if you sing to me again.” His warm breath tickled my neck. “I really liked your song. But that isn’t all. I’mthankful you were here last night.” He sighed. “And I never imagined saying that.”

I knew he planned to hang up before we fell asleep and for me never to hear what I did. But fate had other ideas, and it was meant to happen for a reason.

“I’ll always be here.” I ran my hands up and down his back, pulling another sigh from him. “Now and forever.”

Chapter Eighteen

JETT

We’d been dancing around each other for a couple of weeks.

Heated glances, simple touches, more time spent in her and Griffin’s presence.

Things had changed since she saw me at my most vulnerable, the night I’d definitely planned to never let her see. I’d been hiding not only from myself but from those I cared about.

I’d never imagined she would hear the horror I lived with every day, the nights even worse, but she had. And it had been a turning point. Did it mean it was easy, or that all the shit in my head about not being enough had disappeared?

No.
