Oh my God, this was it,I’d thought.
But just then, the lights shining from the doorway that were on in the other part of the house went out and a loud explosion rocked the building.
Boom!
“What the fuck?” both men yelled in unison, as they raced for the door, leaving me alone.
“Pax,” I whispered as I scrambled to my feet, grabbed my necklace, and pulled my dress around my body.
I knew he was here. Ifelthim.
ChapterThirty-Eight
PAXTON
I laidmy hand over my heart.
It felt like Capri’s voice had whispered in my ear, pleading with me to find her.
I’m coming, darlin’. Hang on.
A lifetime seemed to go by until we had jumped from the plane and made our way to the cabin that held my girl.
With my friends surrounding me and everything in place ready to go, it was time.
I was getting my wife back.
ChapterThirty-Nine
CAPRI
Shots rang out,men were yelling, and I was frozen in place in the pitch dark.
My heart thumped as feet pounded on the floor, heading my way.
I couldn’t see a thing, but then I heard the sweetest, most amazing sound.
“Sweetheart!” Pax’s voice called out frantically through the room.
“Pax!” I cried, still unable to move, just as all the lights in the cabin flipped on.
Standing in the doorway, was my savior.
My husband quickly made his way toward me but stopped a foot short. His eyes scanned every inch of me, his pupils growing large as his orbs filled with pain and rage. I knew what he was seeing and I tried to not let myself feel shame over not being able to stop what had happened.
With my tattered dress hanging partly open, the buttons scattered around the room, my hair tangled in a rat’s nest, and my battered face, I knew I must’ve looked beyond horrible.
“I’m so fucking sorry, baby. So fucking sorry,” he said in an agonized voice, his regret palpable. “I’d kill every last one of them if they weren’t already dead.”
I reeled back slightly at the venom in his tone. I’d seen Pax pissed off, but this was a whole new level I was witnessing. But I realized quickly it didn’t scare me and I couldn’t find it in me to care what happened to any of the men that had killed my parents and almost took me from the happily ever after I’d finally found.
They got what they deserved.
Maybe later I’d have to analyze those dark feelings that had come forward within me so easily, but not right then because all I wanted was for Paxton to hold me.
“Just hold me,” I whispered.
His face visibly relaxed at my words and he closed the remaining distance between us, softly pulling me into his warm body, wrapping his arms around me in their protective cocoon I loved so much.
