ChapterTwenty-Eight
RUBY
I wokeup the same way I had fallen asleep.
In Lyric’s embrace. It was one of my favorite places to be.
Then, I heard small feet outside our door and a soft knock came. Lyric had shut the door during our lovemaking and we forgot to open it a smidge as we usually did so Autumn knew she could come in. It amazed me that she hadn’t thrown open the door but knocked.
I was dressed in a nightie, but Lyric got out of bed and threw his sweats and t-shirt on before jumping back under the covers. Then, I called out for her to come in.
The door opened slowly and Autumn stood there for a minute.
“Hey, Pumpkin,” Lyric said.
And that did it.
She loved when he called her that and her face lit up. Autumn took off at a run, her little legs going as fast as she could and when she launched herself up on the bed she yelled, “Mommy, Daddy.”
Lyric caught her as she worked to scramble onto him and then we both looked at one another in shock.
“Gyth was right,” I whispered. “She called me Mommy.”
“I guess we forgot to talk about that last night,” Lyric said.
We’d been wrapped up in talking about Gemma and then wrapped up with each other.
Autumn bounced around trying to situate herself between us.
“Later,” I told him. “I’d like to talk to Gramps and Jett about it.”
Lyric nodded in understanding. He didn’t argue that it was for only us to discuss and he didn’t complain that I went to my family on things—sometimes first—that I felt were important. But it did affect them too so it made sense. The fact he got me and let me be who I was, made me love him even more.
So, right then, we enjoyed the fact that the angel wanted to cuddle with us. For a while, it didn’t seem like it would ever happen, but she was changing and it was astounding to watch.
As she lay there snuggled into both of us, I had a strong feeling Gyth was right again about her needing us the way a child needs parents. And I liked the idea of that too.
The question was…
What did Lyric think about it?
I hoped we were on the same page when it all came down to it because I was hopelessly in love with the man.
ChapterTwenty-Nine
LYRIC
I stood staringat the cases.
“Well this seems familiar,” Kace said.
I gave Kace an eye roll the women would be proud of. “Probably because it wasn’t too long ago we were here helping you, dumbshit,” I said to him.
All the guys were there, except for Bodie. Even though it had been a few weeks he was still busy getting settled and had both of the girls that he didn’t want to leave with anyone quite yet.
“Yeah, but if I remember correctly you were the one knowing what you were doing and now you're standing there looking lost.”
