“Well it’s our place. Now we just need a song.”

We were making memories together. I’d never had that. A boyfriend, a place, or a song. Damn I wanted the song. I smiled.

“I’d like that.” Then my stomach rumbled again and Lyric chuckled as he got out of the vehicle.

He ran around to my side and opened the truck door. Once out, he took my hand and led me toward the diner.

“Prepare yourself, because I have. Mabel is going to be ecstatic. She told me to make sure I brought you back and when she finds out you’re my girl, well all hell might just break loose.”

A wave of giddiness swept through me at him calling me his girl. I’d never had a first date as a teenager, but I imagined it would feel something like what I was feeling right then. Because nobody made me feel like Lyric.

We reached the door to the diner but I pulled on Lyric’s hand and dragged him to the side. I pushed him against the building and grabbed his face. Then I stole a kiss.

My fingers itched to touch him everywhere but we were standing outside a restaurant, so I reluctantly eased back.

“I want you so bad,” I whispered.

Lyric’s eyes darkened and heated with interest.

“But I’m starving.” I gave him a silly smile.

His deep chuckle went south, causing a tingle in my lady parts and I almost forgot about food. But then he took my hand once again and walked back to the door.

Before we entered he looked at me and said, “There will be time for me to devour you later.”

When he winked, my belly fluttered with anticipation.

“That’s not fair.” I gave a pout.

Lyric’s laughter was drowned out by Mabel as we walked in.

“Look at you. You finally pulled that head out of your rear and found yourself a good woman. And you listened to me when I told you to bring her back.” Mabel wrapped her arms around Lyric and gave him a big hug. He let go of my hand and squeezed her back.

Then she took her turn with me. When she leaned in, she whispered in my ear. “You got yourself a special man, don’t let him go.”

“I know I’m a lucky lady,” I said softly.

“Hey, now, break it up,” Lyric called out. “No fair telling secrets.”

Mabel and I released each other, both laughing wildly.

“Come on you two love birds, let’s get you a table. I’ll put you in the back corner away from prying eyes just in case you can’t keep your hands to yourselves.”

Lyric shook his head and smiled, but then when he glanced at me he waggled his brows. I swatted his arm.

“And it begins,” Mabel said with humor.

The sweet, crazy lady was right though. She sat us down, waited on us, and as we ate we couldn’t keep our hands off each other. I knew Lyric preferred the spot we were in so he could see the whole diner and keep watch for anything troublesome, but it also worked out for kisses we shared and touches we snuck throughout the night.

It was all wonderful until the bill came.

“You seemed to have impressed someone with your romantic gestures because the bill is all paid,” Mabel had said after Lyric asked for the ticket.

She did however lay the bill down so we could see the note written on the ticket.

When Lyric picked it up, we both read it at the same time.

“Isn’t that sweet,” Mabel said, oblivious to the situation and tension radiating off Lyric, as well as the fear running through me.
