“I know what you mean, Ms. Sharon. I’m sure I’ll see you again.”

The two of them hugged while my dad and I stood to the side.

“Maverick, it was nice to meet you. I probably should say welcome to the family.” My dad chuckled. “I like you, and if Sharon and the little princess like you, then you ain’t going anywhere.” My dad hugged her and whispered something in her ear that made her smile.

We finished our goodbyes, then headed to her house. I always kept a bag with a change of clothes in my trunk, so I didn’t have to worry about going home in the morning.

“What did my dad say to you when he whispered in your ear?” I asked as soon as we got in my truck.

“Wouldn’t you like to know,” Maverick teased with a pretty ass smile on her face.

“So you not going to tell me?”

I backed out of the driveway and drove down the street.

“Nope. It’s between me and him.”

“Okay. Keep your secrets then.” I fake pouted.

Maverick reached over and pinched my cheek.

“Not you pouting.” She giggled. “He said that he’s happy that we found each other.”

Reaching over the console, I grabbed Maverick’s hand and kissed the back of it. The light from the streetlights illuminated her face when she smiled.

“I’m happy we did too.” I kissed her hand again, then focused on the road.

When we got to Maverick’s house, we showered, then made love, and I fell asleep between her thighs like I said I would.

Things with Onyxand me progressed faster than I would have imagined. I wasn’t complaining about it, though, because I enjoyed spending time with him. Ever since we went to that concert, my feelings had gotten stronger for him. He made me feel safe whenever he was around, and that was all I ever wanted in a partner.

My friends liked him, and his family seemed to like me. When we left his father’s house, I only shared part of what his father told me. What I didn’t tell him was that his father thanked me for bringing the light back into his son’s life.

My heart hurt for him losing his daughter’s mother and having to raise her on his own. I commended him for that because some men would have left their baby for someone elseto raise. Onyx stepping up like that made me like him even more. Some days I wondered when the bad side would come out, and so far, it hadn’t happened. I was used to men being great for the first few weeks, then switching up, but I truly didn’t see that happening with Onyx.

“Good morning.”

“Woof! Woof!”

I looked up when Spencer started barking at the same time I heard a stranger’s voice speak to me.

“Good morning,” I responded as I tried to pull Spencer back.

The man smiled at me, even though Spencer looked like he wanted to bite his head off.

“I’m sorry.” I pulled on Spencer’s leash, but he wasn’t letting up.

That wasn’t the first time he’d done that whenever a man got too close to me. The only men that were allowed to get close to me was Onyx and my dad. Anyone else, he would be ready to take their heads off.

“I see he’s very protective over you.” The guy smiled.

It was a nice smile, but that’s all it was, . . . nice. He didn’t make my heart flutter or butterflies swarm in my belly the way Onyx did. He was just a handsome man, but I wasn’t interested.

“Yeah, he is.” I had a tight hold on Spencer’s leash, but he continued to growl at the man.

“I was hoping to get your phone number. Maybe we could talk sometimes.”

“I’m sorry. I have a boyfriend.”
