“I mean, I think you are capable of doing whatever you want to do.”
She smiles at me. “I have to think about how I can make money to help my sisters pay for their college tuition and fees, so maybe I will be a businesswoman.” She runs her fingers through her hair, and she stares at me. “But anyway, that’s not your problem. I should get back downstairs because I have more research to do on the other hotels.”
“Thank you.” I grab her hand and squeeze. “You did a great job. You’re a great worker, Katherine. I know that you know that. And I’m sure everyone in this building is soon to know that.” I touch the side of the face. “I want to kiss you so badly right now.”
“I know,” she says, “but I just don’t want people to think that if I get anywhere in this company, it’s because I’m doing the boss.”
I smile and nod. I want to lean forward so badly and give her a big kiss, but I don’t.
“I understand. Professionalism in the office all the way.” I want to tell her I love her so badly, but instead, I step back. “Good job, Katherine. I’ll speak to you later.”
“Yes, boss,” she says and I watch as she walks away. This woman makes my heart soar and I can’t wait to make her officially mine.
Chapter Twenty-One
Katherine
I arrive early at the office the next morning with a box of bagels and a box of donuts. Xander, Marina, and Cora are all sitting at their desks working hard and I’m so proud of my little crew.
“Hey, how’s it going everyone?”
“Good good,” Cora says as she gets up to greet me. “Marina got you one of those coffees that you like at Starbucks.”
“Oh?” I ask. “What’d you get?”
“I got you the caramel macchiato,” Marina jumps up. “I remember you said you love caramel drinks.”
“You’re so sweet. Thank you. And I brought donuts and bagels because I really appreciate how much you guys helped me go through all of the paperwork for the hotel deal.I wanted to say that Mr. Heathcliff was really grateful, and I'm really proud of the work that we did.”
“I’m really proud of it as well,” Cora says. “You’ve been such a great addition to the team.” She pauses. “Well I mean you’ve elevated the team and we are all so grateful.” We all pause aswe hear a knock on the door. I turn around, and for a moment, I think I’m about to see Jack and my heart drops when I realize that it’s not him.
“Hi, everyone. Cora, Xander, Marina, and you must be Katherine,” a lady I’ve never seen before walks in.
“Hi. Yeah.”
“We haven’t met yet, but I’m Mary. Mary Sigman. I am one of the HR coordinators.”
“Oh, nice to meet you, Mary.”
“I actually have some good news for all of you.”
“Oh?” I say as I stare at her.
“I am here to inform you that you are all being upgraded to one of the top-floor offices, and you’re all to receive raises, and we’re putting you officially in charge of all hotel marketing and research.”
“No way,” Marina says. “That’s amazing.”
Xander looks excited. “We’re going up. We’re not going to be in the dungeon anymore. Will we have a view?”
Mary smiles. “I’m pleased to say that you’re all going to have a view, and actually, Katherine, I was wondering if you and I could have a conversation. We were hoping that you wouldn’t mind becoming the supervisor for the team.”
I stare at her. “I can’t. I’m new.” I look over at Cora, Zandra, and Marina, hoping they’re not going to be angry at me. “They should definitely be considered first.”
“No, we shouldn’t,” Cora says. “Let’s be real. If it wasn’t for you, we wouldn’t even be getting this promotion.”
“I agree,” Xander says. “We’re not bad workers, but we definitely weren’t the strongest, and I don’t want to be a supervisor.”
“I don’t want it,” Marina says. “I need to concentrate on my auditions. Did I tell you guys I got a call back?”
