“Ow.” He rubs his shoulder. “What was that for?”

“For not telling any of us.” He grabs my wrist before my hand lands on his arm, attempting to slap him again.

“I didn’t want to tell anyone over the phone. Now, please stop hitting me.”

Levi lets go while I scowl at him. He should’ve told me. I would’ve visited him. He’s too stubborn and too damn nice to everyone. Including his exes.

“Just know that if I ever see Ray in person, I’ll put those self-defense moves I learned to use,” I state as assertively as possible.

Levi laughs and hugs me. “Why can’t we just be a thing, Kamila? Everything would be so much easier.”

“Because I want to remain friends with you forever.” I shrug, knowing that if anything more were to happen, the friendship would end in a matter of months.

Levi and I are similar in many ways. Ways that it wouldmake more sense for us to be together rather than Jake and I for example. Levi’s family doesn’t have a lot of money, just like mine. Both of us have everything we need, we’re just the only two in the group who use financial aid and loans, which are necessary to get through four years at Driscoll. It’s one of the best colleges in the country, meaning most of the people who go here are trust fund babies, politician’s kids, legacies, or minorities with amazing grades and recommendations. Jake and Em don’t have any financial issues, but they aren’t the type to flaunt their money in people’s faces, either.

I’m brought back to the conversation when our food arrives, and we dig in.

“Kami, did you have that business class today?” Em asks with her mouth full.

I take a sip of my root beer. “No, that’s tomorrow, and I am not looking forward to it at all. I’ve heard the professor is a real pain in the ass when it comes to her projects and exams.”

Jake lifts his head. “Are you talking about Professor Mills?”

I point a fry at him. “That’s the one.”

Jake throws his burger down. “I hated Mills. She’s a hard ass and a dick.”

Throwing my burger down too, I roll my eyes. “Great. Thanks. I feel so much better now.”

Jake smiles before picking his food back up. “I’m sure you’ll do fine. If you need help, let me know.”

“Why are you taking that class, anyways? Aren’t you a Public Relations major?” Levi asks.

“Yeah, but I needed the extra credits, and it was one of the last classes available as an elective.” He nods sympathetically while wiping ketchup off the side of his mouth.

We finish our food and are waiting for the check when Em leans close to me from across the table and starts to whisper something.

“Don’t turn around, but there is a really hot guy sitting a couple of tables away from us.”

She’s practically drooling at whoever this person is.

Levi tries to turn around before she slaps his hand. “Ouch. What is with everyone hitting me tonight? I just wanted a peek.”

“Don’t be so obvious. I’ll describe what he looks like, and with any luck, he’ll walk past us,” Em mutters.

Levi huffs, rolling his eyes. “Fine. What does he look like?”

She grins and wiggles her brows. “Well, he’s definitely Kami’s type.” She tilts her head. “Actually, he looks like everyone’s type.”

Containing my laugh, I bring her back to reality. “Details, Emma.”

She clears her throat. “I was getting there, sheesh. Anyways, he looks tall, verytall, brown hair with that nice swoop haircut. He might have brown eyes? It’s a little hard to tell from here. But that jawline is so sharp it could cut through glass,” she continues while squinting her eyes. “Oh, and his eyebrow is pierced. He has a couple of tattoos on his arms, too.” She shrugs. “He’s just plain old hot.”

Jake and I laugh.

She squints harder. “Wait, one of the tattoos looks familiar. It’s really standing out against the others.” Her shoulders slump.

“What?” I ask when she remains silent.
