Chapter 40

Thario watchedthe screen but kept track of Calla’s movements. He kept the video turned so she couldn’t see what was happening.

“Sharp sent a note. They are breaching the door in about a minute.”

“Oh god.”

Thario reached out and took her hand. “It will be okay. The guys are used to doing stuff like this.”

“I know. I’m just not used to doing this.”

“It’s okay. Few people are.” He glanced at the screen, seeing that the guys still hadn’t entered.

He was about to look away when he saw movement. It all happened so fast. A flashbang exploded on the view screen, and he couldn't see anything for a moment.

By the time the smoke cleared, his phone was ringing. He answered, and Calla clutched his hand, worry filling her eyes.

Calla blew out a heavy breath. There was nothing she could do. She knew without a doubt that if she’d shown up like Brentwanted, he would have killed her, or worse, sold her to someone else who would have eventually killed her.

She wanted to throw up. Thario was being so nice, but her brain was buzzing so much that she couldn't keep up.

Then his phone rang, and he answered. She dropped into the chair next to him, praying that her sister was okay.

Thario nodded, then put the phone on speaker. She heard one of the guys speaking, but it took her a moment to understand what he was saying.

"She has a few bruises, but she's okay. We have him, and it's time to call the police."

Tears filled her eyes, and she felt incredibly weak. She wanted to hear everything, but the amount of buzz in her brain made it impossible to keep up with what was going on.

She saw Thario on the phone, but didn't know what he was saying. Then Thario put his arms around her, and he kissed the side of her head.

“Let’s go see her.”

She jerked back. “See her?”

“Yes. The medics will probably want to take her to the hospital, so before that happens, we should go see her.”

“She’s okay?”

“Yes. Sharp said she is okay.”

“Thank God.”

“Let’s go.”

Thario helped her out to the van, Frog right beside her, and they drove around the block, stopping in front of a small house.

Her sister had lived here. If she'd known, she could have escaped. But Brent would never have let her escape. He had kept a tight leash on her. The only reason she'd gotten away was because Brent had screwed up and attacked Thario.

Calla stepped from the van and spied Abigail. She absolutely knew it was her sister.

Abigail glanced up, and she saw recognition in her sister’s eyes. So many emotions spun through her that the world faded away, and it was just the two of them. She had never thought this moment would ever come.

Then Abigail was moving closer, and Calla took a few steps before she threw her arms around Abigail, tears streaming down her cheeks.

Time passed, the cops were there, then the ambulance. The paramedic made her step back, but she held onto Abigail’s hand until Thario took her hands, promising her they would catch up with Abigail once she was at the hospital.

It seemed so overwhelming, and the only reason she was still standing was because Thario held her up.
