“Now, let’s go look at the bedrooms and bathrooms.”
Rune tried to hide the wince. Damn, this redecorating business was going to be painful for his wallet.
ChapterThirteen
Dominique stared at the email Veronica had sent her.
Her assistant was out with the flu this week but nothing Dominique said could convince her to stop emailing and trying to do things from home. Finally, Dominique had threatened to change the password to the company files if Veronica wouldn’t rest. And the only reason that worked is because Dominique also promised to make all the calls and send all the emails Veronica had on her schedule for the week.
So, now she was staring at a huge list and feeling like an ass. She knew Veronica worked extremely hard, but this list also told a deeper story. With this much daily work on her plate, there’s no way her assistant would have time for a social life.
Dominique drummed her fingers on her desk. She hated the hiring process, but it was clear that the only way Veronica would work less is if there was someone else around to take half the workload.
She would post an ad on the employment app for supernatural beings. Someone would turn up. She only hoped it was sooner rather than later.
For now, though, she was going to handle Veronica’s workload herself this week.
First on the list, follow-up call with Astra Falk. There were a few notes next to Astra’s name about her final match and suspending matches for a while. Hmmm. She wondered if that was still the case.
Dominique’s visual memory was excellent, and the name instantly conjured up a tall, statuesque Valkyrie with gorgeous red hair. Sylvie’s sister, she remembered. There was no mistaking their resemblance.
Dominique looked up Astra’s number and picked up her phone. A few moments later, Astra answered the phone.
“Astra Falk. Falk Security.”
“Hello, Ms. Falk. This is Dominique Proxa from Mystical Matchmakers. How are you today?”
“I’m fine. How are you?”
“I’m well. I was wondering if you have a few moments to talk,” Dominique asked.
“I have about ten minutes before my next meeting. What can I do for you, Ms. Proxa?”
“I’m calling to follow-up on your match with Mr. Ferguson and to see if you’d like to resume using our service.”
“I’m still seeing Mr. Ferguson,” Astra said.
Dominique’s magic shivered at her words, shifting. As the descendent of some of the most powerful fairy godmothers, she could sense the strands of fate that wove the world together. The magic of love and destiny spoke to her, and Astra was falling in love. She could feel it.
“That’s lovely,” Dominique said. “Would you like your membership to remain suspended then?”
“Yes, please.”
“No problem.” Dominique hesitated. She didn’t have the talent for empathy that Veronica did, but she knew that her assistant often asked the following question. “Is there anything I can help you with? Any concerns?”
It was Astra’s turn to pause. “I’m not sure.”
“Are you having any issues with Mr. Ferguson?” Dominique asked.
“No, no. It’s just…my family. My parents have strange ideas about how to handle meeting the people that my sisters and I dated.”
“What do you mean?” Dominique asked.
“Let’s just say that Mom and Dad like to ‘test’ them. They ask tons of questions. They’re nosy. They meddle. They like to play pranks or challenge them to sparring matches.”
“Oh, my,” Dominique said.
“Yeah.”
