“Shouldn’t you be getting back to work.”

Dominique laughed once more.

“Let Mr. Ferguson and Ms. Falk figure this out. I promise you they’ll be fine,” Dominique said.

“I will, I will,” Veronica answered, lifting her hands in surrender.

Before either of them could say anything else, Dominique’s cell phone rang.

“Saved by the bell,” Veronica murmured as her boss walked back into her office to answer it.

Her gaze drifted to the phone sitting on her desk once more. She was tempted to call Astra Falk to check in with her but realized that wouldn’t be a good idea.

Dominique wanted her to distance herself from the clients and calling Astra Falk wouldn’t accomplish that.

It was difficult, so difficult, not to reach out and pick up that phone, but Veronica resisted.

She needed to step back and let the clients handle themselves. As much as she hated to see people hurt, she knew that she couldn’t control the actions of others.

That was a painful lesson she’d learned far too young and far too well.

ChapterEight

Since she was a teenager and first interested in dating, Astra’s mother had told her for years that she would know when she met the right man.

And, for the last decade or so, Astra hadn’t believed her.

She’d kissed too many frogs instead of princes during her twenties and thirties.

But now…now, she believed.

Rune Ferguson was the right man for her. Each time she saw him or spoke to him, it only reinforced her belief.

She knew that her mother and father would probably disapprove at first, just on principle. For all their complaining about not having any grandchildren, they seemed eager to do their best to run off any men, or women in Devorah’s case, that she and her sisters might bring home. But she was also confident that she could convince her mother to give him a chance without torturing him too much first. And if she could convince her mother, then her father would listen to his wife. Rune would take care of the rest just by being himself.

All in all, she wasn’t too worried about her family.

But she was a little worried about Rune. What if he realized how insane her parents and sisters were and decided to run for his life?

She wasn’t sure what she would do if that happened.

She wanted him. She wanted his humor, his intelligence, his smiles.

His body.

Which was why she was driving over to his house, wearing a snug blue dress, sexy underwear, and the perfume that she saved for special occasions.

In the past, she never would have considered having sex with someone so early in their relationship, but Rune changed the way she felt about a lot of things.

Nerves still fluttered in her belly, even though she’d made her decision and planned on following through. Well, if Rune was interested in taking things further than a few kisses.

Astra laughed. He was interested. He was male, after all.

Then again, he often surprised her with his sensitivity.

Maybe tonight wasn’t a sure thing, but she wanted him to know she was ready when he was.

Astra turned onto his street, a little surprised. The houses were cute, but on the smaller side. With the abundance of bikes, toys, and other detritus kids scattered everywhere, it was clearly a neighborhood full of families.
