“Let’s?”

“Oh, yes. You’re coming to the firm today. Now that I’ve met a man I like, I won’t be working fifty-hour weeks anymore. Which means you need to step up.”

Astra headed toward the locker room and, after a moment’s hesitation, Sylvie followed.

ChapterFour

Veronica Salt took a deep sip of her green tea, wishing it were something stronger.

She had to call Astra Falk today and after their last conversation, she needed a little liquid courage. If she hadn’t felt the emotions churning beneath the surface of Astra’s intimidating exterior, she would have immediately given in to her demand to cancel her membership.

But the woman was lonely beneath it all. And frustrated. And a little afraid.

Since Veronica couldn’t read thoughts, only emotions, she could only assume that Astra was afraid of being alone for the rest of her long existence and she couldn’t blame her.

That same fear sometimes gripped Veronica with vicious teeth. For most immortals, relationships were difficult. For empaths like her, they were damn near impossible.

After taking a calming breath, Veronica picked up the phone and dialed the number on her computer screen. Within two rings, Astra answered.

“Astra Falk,” she said, her voice even and professional.

“Hello, Ms. Falk. This is Veronica Salt with Mystical Matchmakers. How are you today?”

There was a short pause and then Veronica heard the sound of a door clicking shut.

“I’m fine, Ms. Salt. How are you?”

“I’m well. I was calling to follow up on your date with Mr. Ferguson.”

There was another brief pause. “My date with Rune went very well,” Astra said. “We’re actually meeting again tomorrow for lunch.”

Veronica smiled. Though emotions were muted through the telephone, she could feel the anticipation coming from Astra. “I’m glad to hear that. I also used your updated intake interview to find two other matches for you. Would you like me to forward you their information so you can make a decision on whether to speak with them?”

“Go ahead and forward the information to me,” Astra said. “I’m not sure if I will follow up with them, but I would like to have the option if necessary.”

“Okay then.” Veronica paused. “Is there anything else I can do for you, Ms. Falk? Would you like to discuss anything?”

There was another long pause and Veronica got the impression that the Valkyrie wanted to ask her something.

But the other woman finally said, “No, thank you, Ms. Salt. Everything is fine for now.”

“Well, then I’ll let you go. Have a nice day, Ms. Falk.”

“You, too,” she said.

After they disconnected, Veronica stared at her phone for a long moment, lost in thought.

“Was that Astra Falk?”

Veronica looked up to see Dominique standing at the doorway of her office.

“Yes, it was.”

“Was her date with Mr. Ferguson satisfactory?”

Veronica smiled. “Astra said that it went well and that they were planning to meet again tomorrow. She seemed to be looking forward to it.”

Dominique nodded. “That’s good.” She laughed a little. “Strange, I never would have matched her with Mr. Ferguson, but it looks like my instincts were off after all.”
